So, it is the time of year where we pull out the mops and gaffa tape and patch things up.

The question is, how much do you have planned this holiday?

Here is my work load/the things being done over the holiday involving me:

Refurb main computer room, including 34 new computers

Refurb secondary computer room, including 10 new computers

Create third computer room, including 34 new computers

Get rid of existing 3rd computer room (rip out cabling)

Have multiple new fibre's installed in various places to replace substandard cat5 links and wireless links

Implement a new phone system using asterisk and heartbeat

Refurbish our administration office (complete recable)

Move my office down into the admin office

Refurbish bits of 2 class rooms to make a couple of computer clusters (12 new machines)

A new proximity card access system is being installed, which I will have to set up for use

Produce ID cards/proximity cards for all staff

Reorganise server cabinet so I can lock it and also fit the new kit in.

Have a smartboard installed in our art room

Various other bits and pieces

Reimage all computers in school to ensure they have all the software they need on

Do some work on all staff laptops to remove copyright infringing software and ensure they are up to date and secure

Move all my bits and pieces stored around the school into my new store cupboard.

I've probably missed something...

But that lot is all going on in the holidays with my having a week off in the middle.

We are rebuilding our entire domain. The people (who shall remain nameless) who originally built the domain, used a single label domain name!

Installed admt v3, to help migrate all the users from the old domain to the new domain. This has been a great tool, and almost reminds of the good things that MSN do :) Tool even migrates the users password :) We are redesigning the groups so will be scripting copying the file permissions to keep security as we want it on group/users.

In theory we could have renamed the domain, but have been looking for an excuse to rebuild the network from scratch :)

Also changing our network kit from Cisco to 3Com.

Setting up 47 new laptops for staff.

Above is on top of our daily duties, so going to busy ;)

Not the other way round? 8O

Play Wii Sports on Hall Projector/Sound System with mates.

Sleep on the job.

Ah, I see you got those IBM self-managing, self-maintaining and self-ordering servers then? :D

Create two new ICT Suites with 20 new pcs and 1 printer in each.

Push 10 of the older pcs into our SEN Centre

Have the remainder attached to smartboards

Have drop down screen and projector in Assembly Hall and Gym

Have Digital Signage installed

Get 30 Laptops repaired (mainly keyboard replacements)

Replace our four year old servers with spanking new ones

Add a NAS into the equation

Upgrade Firewall to latest ISA

Completly revamp our website (looking tired now)

And then its the usual sims, bromcom end of year molarky!!

I am hoping to get the projector in hall mid Aug so my colleague and I

Going to Tenerife tomorrow -and after that - officially nothing but in fact I am getting 21 machines off a fellow Edugeeker which are twice as fast as ours - so I need to collect them and sort them out with XP

Which doesn't sound like much but I am not supposed to do anything at all in the holidays.

I'm off a lot these holidays, 4 weeks in total (1 family week for moving house and 3 for annual leave.) Only leaves me 3 weeks really.

In that time I'm:

refurbishing 4 suites (software/hardware.)

Changing all the settings on the wireless in the school to make it more secure and configuring all of the wireless computers that I can get to at the moment.

testing my printer script works for auto creating printers depending on the computers containing OU (seems to work fine but I want to make sure)

updating the schools 3 inter/intra net sites.

Installing 11 new PCs that I've been putting off for the past month.

installing 2 new network printers (a doddle now I have that script working!!)

Reorganising the server room, taking the lot out of the room so I can put it back into the room in a far more sensible arrangement!

Messing about with a lot of projectors, some not working, all needing cleaned and one IWB with seems to be knackered.

I've already done a lot of that work already though, only a week and a half into the holidays :)

Well, I've got is easy this summer, especially in comparison to some of you!

* I've got about 10 rebuilds/new PCs to do

* Co-ordinate installation of 3x projectors and 2x 680i SMART boards (the funky new height adjustable ones)

* Co-ordinate installation of network points in our "new" Sixth Form block

* SR5 and SR6 installations

* SIMS update if I'm feeling brave (probably one for October half term though)

* update (i.e. write!) disaster recovery policy

* general holiday tasks like cleaning PCs, tidying office, etc

* familiarise myself with Vista and Office 2007 to see if there's any benefits in installing either of these.

* take 4 weeks holiday :-)

Over the summer we are getting two new server and rebuilding our whole domain.

setup MS server 2003 on 4 servers

create new ris image for pc

reimage all 400 pc's

create software packages for new and old software

test software on network

install 30 new projectors around school

reimage 60 laptops

figure out how to set the wireless up around school, we have 17 access points but they have never actually worked properly

biggest pain will be the staff who want to take there laptops home over summer as the network is being rebuilt, when they come back they wont be able to connect and the offline file system wont work for them, so who knows what might go wrong there.

somewhere between all of this take holidays.
