Heads Up on mac server upgrade

Hi all,

 

I am planning to upgrade our mac server in the easter holidays, we are currently running Mac OSX Server 10.5.8 and i am moving onto Mountain lion and subsequently will be upgrading the 12 clients we have on it. Just wondered if anyone has done this if there is anything i need to be aware of that i am likely to come up againt or must remmeber to do.

 

I guess i am just trying to learn from other peoples stumbles.

Have you checked that your Mac server is compatible with ML? I would check the same with your clients as well

There is a lot of difference in regards to management from Leopard to Mountain lion. The most noticable is you no longer have server admin and its all managed within Server and workgroup manager. You can still achieve the same setup as leopard just need to do it a different way. On a lighter note it is a lot more easier to integrate

I would thoroughly check, or test 10.8 before deployment as I have read online that lots of features are removed, or broken in it. As I say, I have read this and it's not through 1st hand experience. As a result we are still running Snow Leopard on our servers.

I use SL Server to manage ML clients, there's no compatibility issues as such, but features like profile manager won't be available to you, but OD and TM work fine.

It's a bit obvious I guess, but I'd say back everything up twice! Also, it might be worth checking that you can connect to the Apple servers to download the updates from School, it wouldn't work through our proxy (there's another thread active about that)

You'll need to upgrade to 10.6 first, patch that to 10.6.8, then you can upgrade - there's no in-place upgrade to ML from Leopard.
