Howdy all,

 

I'm a low level tech in the Southern US. Started tinkering with PCs in the early eighties but trained and worked as an electronics tech for a few years before getting back into PCs at about the DOS 6 time frame.

 

I mainly work with hardware and wiring in a small, out of the way, poor school system. The administration won't hire any really qualified IT staff because they consider them a threat, so things get kind of sporty around here. I usually let the guys in the office handle the real technical stuff but due to some staff "changes" some of that type of thing is now dropping in my lap.

 

Lately I've been thinking of Lewis Grizzard's childhood dream of opening up a liquor store...

Learning the ropes and being polite, as I know it's mostly technical here. Love a good old forum, feels nostalgic.

Not really a Newbie post but wasn't sure where to put this but just wanted to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and happy new year. 

Hopefully most of us have some time off over the Christmas break and we can wind down relax and just eat lots of food.

I've been a member for a few years, more so to find useful quirky school related information (MIS related normally!) but felt it was about time I started posting a little; particularly where I can offer anyone any help or advice.

 

I've worked in IT for around 25 years or so, mostly in the corporate space.  More recently (for the past 5 years) I have worked for a Sussex-based MSP called computer2cloud, c. 3 of those spent leading their Education Services business.  As part of this I am (for the time being at least) most days embedded with one of my (2 school, 4-site, c. 1850 pupil) MAT customers on-site, operating as their virtual IT Manager, so I've experienced the aches and pains of how it is to manage a large school IT environment first hand for a few years now, both operationally and strategically.

 

Again, only too happy to help and advise anyone on here if I can (and I'll always chip in and comment if I think I'll add value to anything)...and I know I'm from the MSP space, but definitely please do not see me as the enemy 🙂

 

If what I do, and the services computer2cloud offer are of any interest to anyone, please feel free to look up my details in my profile (our website and my linkedin handle are there) and take a look.  Certainly not here to do a hard sell on anyone but IT MSP and consultancy services are primarily what I involve myself in (full transparency) and of course happy to help anyone in need in that capacity!

Rupert's the name, most things are the game, but not necessarily played very well!

 

I am an ICT Technician and Communications Officer for a pair of federated primary schools (which, fortunately, are on the same site!) in Kent with a total of around 850-900 ish students - we are four form entry. Pretty varied background, 7 years on the railway where I went from lowly part-timer on bottom grade in a ticket office to the youngest top grade clerk in the company. Worked briefly for a large secondary school in a MAT for a while several years ago before dabbling with car insurance, CNC programming and stores before winding up at the best place I've ever worked!

 

We are regular customers of ICT Direct so nice to see them repping on here!

 

In the last few weeks I finished our digital strategy to take us through to 2030, and there's heaps to do, the majority of which is playing catch-up following years of underfunding by previous leadership. Luckily our leadership nowadays is pretty interested in tech (although first to admit they are not tech savvy - just aware it's extremely important and needs to be taken seriously!) and are willing to work with me, but the funding is always tight, so we have had to make some interesting decisions! Mainly including the entire network infrastructure refresh being undertaken completely within house - i.e. myself and a colleague whose official job is nothing to do with ICT whatsoeover, but oversees the bigger picture alongside me. So that will be fun. Fortunately, the vast majority of the cabling is intact and of reasonable age and quality so will not need wholesale replacement, just a few bits here and there for things that are being moved, but even so, it's something neither one of us has done before!

 

I will quite happily share whatever knowledge or opinions etc I can but don't be surprised if you find me asking how to achieve something ludicrous or daft in the name of lack of funds or time etc...

 

When I'm not being a techy geek I have a penchant for owning stupid cars, so although I daily a lovely, comfortable, reliable Skoda, my "toy" is a 2003 Land Rover Discovery 2 with the TD5 engine, hence my username - I love those engines... when they work... a feeling I often have with things at work, too. 😂
