Hi All,

 

Returning to Edugeek after a long absence (and loss of login details!! lol). Hoping to be back in IT in Schools soon (interview tomorrow). Was self employed working for school for 8 years before moving to the South West. Took time out helping set up a B&B with the wife and now wanting to return to IT in schools.

Welcome back and hope the interview goes well. Let us know how it goes. If you make it back, many of us will be very interested in your reflections since last time around. There's a fair bit of negativity in school support staff, some borne of collapsing pay, lack of investment, training and general disrespect. For some the flexibility, and altruistic commitment to education gets us by, but it will be interesting to hear your thoughts after a few months back.

Hello, my name is Chris and I work for a Charging Solutions manufacturer in the UK and i'm based in Brooklyn, New York.

 

I'm interested in the problems faced by IT Technicians, Technology Directors and anybody who is responsible for maintaining the mass of devices that are used in schools.

There are a lot of introverts on here - some of us just hide it well

 

Advantages of a forum is that you can type an answer when you are feeling like it - and ignore everyone when you want to do that

 

N.B. not all the threads are serious techy ones - if you want cheering up look for the less serious ones!!

I'm not nessecarily new to this site, I've been in and out as a lurker but once you lurk for long enough you'll eventually join.

 

I initially came into the ' industry ' via an appreticeship and ended up staying at the same school. At the time the school was still fairly new and expanding so the focus was mainly on getting new kit in and getting it deployed. Now that those days are over ( no more serial numbers ) It's time to shift into a more relaxed maintenance / network monitoring role.

 

Unfortunately ( or fortunately depending on how you see it ) there is no IT ' department ' per se here it was pretty much solo from the beginning ( the old network manager was only on site for one day per week ).

 

So far so good, nothing has caught fire yet.

 

In the long term I'm looking to do CompTIA network + in the short term I've got a cent OS VM to play with.

Not new but been gone long enough to qualify as new I guess.

 

So I am Carl - 33, and a Sharepoint Administrator and Online Manager (managing a team of 12) now in the private sector. I was in the education sector for 9 years total, and left to go private sector. Have been there since. I have 2 daughters (10 and 5 respectively). I have had a few mental health issues (and was sectioned for the better part of 3 months), and well on the mend. I got married and divorced, and now freely doing my own thing (except when I have my kids).

 

My expertise in IT was WiFi but I have spent the last 3 years in software testing and online development and have a keen focus on both (as such, I am a certified Scrum master, and certified in both Agile and Waterfall methodologies).

 

Now I deem myself to be mentally well enough, I am happy to be back! :)

I asked my employers for it. They booked me on the course and I paid 10% of the course cost out of my salary over 1 year. As it was like £800 at the time, the company paid 90% and I paid something daft like £6.50 a month for the year following. The company also paid for my accomodation, food and expenses whilst on the course and exams too :)

I'm Jon, I work in Northampton as an assistant head who does all of the TT, options, data, dept oversight etc. I teach Chemistry and Physics, 27 lessons of 40 a week and I work with SIMS and Nova T6. I'm no expert on the last two but have created three TT with not much training - hence my member name.....
