hi

any one know of screen capture software.

what i'm after is very specific i would like something where i can basically hold down a key comibnation and grab an area of the active screen.

yes i know how to use paintbrush and printscreen and alt + printscreen but I have so many screenshots to do with writing documentation i'm looking for something to save time.

and also easily able to pull single frames from avi's although vlc + pause and the above would work fine.

that works quite nicely,

can you export to word document, don't really get on with onenote

Yeah just have onenote open and then when it prompts you to put on a page select copy to clipboard and paste into word.

The one that produces the most aesthetically pleasing screenshots of specific windows, is called 'Windows Clippings', as it won't give you black corners, but instead transparent ones. It also makes the aero effect transparent, whereas if you do ALT+Print Screen, whatever you had behind that window will be visible behind the aero.

But the only problem is, that you have to pay for it.

If you are producing a walkthrough and want to save time you could use Problem Steps Recorder (psr.exe) available in Windows 7? It allows you to start recording and makes a text record of what you do and takes screenshots. Downside is if you need to crop an image you still need to do this but as you already have the images recorded it is fairly straight forward if you transfer the content to word.

Alternatively you could just use the file it creates which can be viewed in IE.

+1 for Problem Steps recorder.

Doesn't help you, but when we moved to Macs the command-shift-4 screenshot/snipping function was one of the best little functions built into the OS. I create a lot of instruction type documents and I found this much easier than in windows.

I was tempted to say that myself earlier but had a gut feeling I would get the anti mac bashing crowd. Although with the windows screen grab utils you can probably setup a keyboard shortcut to take a screen grab using the mouse cursor to set the specified area to capture

Yeah thats pretty much what you can do with onenote (although shortcut is built in!). You just need to have onenote installed not even open which I was wrong about above.
