neilmc Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Does anyone use a media server in school? We have lots of Videos which are used around the school and are stored on a shared drive for the teachers. I want to see if there is a decent media server which anyone can recommend with a server and client side? I know this can be done through media player, but I wondered if there was anything else anyone has used? Thanks

It's pretty good Media Library Software - Blackboard and Moodle Streaming Integration This is our site. You have to authenticate to get to the vast majority of the content. I don't think it was massively expensive in the grander scheme of things (certainly nothing like what we play for the likes of Blackboard) but it was in the thousands of pounds, maybe something like £3k? It does depend on which modules you buy.
zag Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 We just have a seperate shared drive with videos on it linked to our students and teacher desktops. All computers have VLC installed on them so its as simple as clicking on the files.
bushby Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 when i get home il upload the file and dig out the guide i made up for my last place basic is make a publishing point name required folder the same and the asp just lists each folder and then a colum for vids and one for audio also i made the media streaming server as a apprentice and the server is now owned by Hampshire county council that was fun explaining how it worked and all

If you do have a budget then it is worth looking for the right solution, some come with extra features. Open source and free ones are great, they are free! But they do require some work and time dedicated to get them up and running and maintain. We went with a purchased system and once its setup we have not had to dedicate much time at all for management, plus it come with a bunch of other features.

ozydave Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 +1 for helix Wanted this for a long time. Finally got it installed this week. It's great being able to see the content on any device iPhones etc. I can let staff upload any format of video and helix does the encoding. No input from me!!

Jordy-Gaz Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 we've got a 2tb disk for the storage - we'd prefer the local storage so resources are always available! google groups has a dedicated resourcespace section which is really good! they also use BITNAMI which is a simple installer ... (And easy to uninstall if you don't like it)
