So interesting of all though, is from macrumors, which suggests a smaller 8GB iPad2 to compete with the cheaper Amazon Kindle Fire.

I don't think Apple are that worried about the Kindle Fire. Why lower the price, when millions of people are willing to buy iPad's at current prices?

iPad 2 price drops to $399 (Wi-Fi) and $529 (Wi-Fi + 3G)

 

A new tablet isn't the only news today; Apple just dropped the price of the iPad 2. Much like how the iPhone 4 got a discount with the release of the 4S, the iPad 2 16GB models now start at $399 (Wi-Fi) and $529 (Wi-Fi + 3G). The rest of the iPad 2 line got price cuts as well, all the way up to the 64GB model.

Well, they've named it 'iPad', so looks like they've shifted to the same naming scheme as the iPad, Apple TV etc... So now people will have to say 'Early 2012 iPad'.

 

Potentially, could this mean a faster release cycle for new models? Or is just to deal with the inevitable version increase - no-one wants an iPad 13 etc...

Mussis is annoyed. She saved for ages and got me one for my 30th Birthday. If I was born a week or two later, she would have got a new iPad as they are the same price.

so from that is states that the display on a Iphone 4 is better then that of the new Ipad?

 

And Apple have made up another term for marketing?

There isn't a set PPI for a display to be classed as a Retina display. As that article states, viewing distance is key.

Bit disappointed personally that there weren't more improvements. Tablets are becoming more and more popular now and already some competitors are producing models with quad core processors which in the current rate of development most (if not all) tablets will be quad core by the end of the year, so Apple will have to produce some rather special for the release of the iPad 4 should there be one of course.

The improvements that have been made will no doubt enhance the iPad further and make a great product even better, but I just think that its not what people have come to expect of Apple in recent years by always pushing the boundaries of development. I know it has 4G but so will most serious mobile devices over the next couple of months. I hope that this changes with the the next gen products as Apple are starting to give more ground to their competitors.

 

As always my opinion I'm sure others will agree/disagree with that!!

I was wondering what kind of things you/anyone really want quad core for, bearing in mind it allegedly has that for the graphics.

It just looks like a hardware refresh to me. Nothing really new at all.

 

With Windows 8 tablets due Q4 2012, they'll all come with USB ports, memory card readers and dual screen functionality, just like a PC. It's a shame Apple didn't include this in their latest iPad3. I think the innovation train has come to a halt. I feel Apple are living dangerously, as a lot of OEMs will start making Windows 8 tablets and the competition will be welcome as it'll lower prices.

 

As for 4G, it doesn't even exist in the UK yet and it won't be available properly until 2013. I feel the same is happening with Apple since the 3GS. Again, it's been mostly hardware refreshes and nothing really innovative.

Because apple never wanted to live with competition, they want to destroy it, or that certainly was the case when Jobs was in charge. I thought a cheaper lower spec iPad something similar to what the iPod product line have, would have seen apple stop the advance of android/windows 8 will have on the market

Surprise gift. She had it engraved too. To be honest though, I'm not entirely fussed about the differences between the iPad 2 and New iPad . I just feel bad for her due to the time out in working and saving for it only to see the price slashed by 20%!

 

Also, I think she got it mid Feb so most likely out of the 14-day return time.

Very good release, everything you could of wished for.

 

The most interesting thing is the ipad 2 drop in price.

 

For 250 quid each these things are going to start showing up all over schools now.

Apple are still selling the iPad 2. This is essentially your cheaper lower spec iPad.

 

I don't think Apple see the Android and Windows 8 as a credible threat (at least not yet) or don't want to compete in the low-end tablet market (where tablets are either sold at a loss - as is the case with the Kindle Fire - or you only make profits in the single-digit range).

So how IS the Retina Display on the new iPad?

Amazing. Seriously amazing. I really love the Retina Display on the iPhone 4/4S, but this feels like a step forward even from that. Not because it's a better display (which it may well be), but because the much larger scale of the screen makes it feel transformative to the experience of looking at a Retina Display and using an iPad.

 

The resolution is what brings it home though. Let me put it this way: when I pulled up a nice, high resolution photograph on the iPad 3rd-gen, I genuinely could not tell the difference between what I was seeing onscreen, and a nice, beautifully shot, well-printed, glossy photograph. It was seriously to that level.

 

It's the best display I've ever seen. Anywhere, period. And it makes a meaningful difference to the experience -- it's not just a spec. (Source)

Hopefully a reduction in child labour for assembly and a lower suicide rate in the board and chip makers in the far east.....thats what I WANT to see.
