Sorry for the late replies. We cannot fit a second HDD in these machines, they're netbooks, so not much to them. The computers do go offsite, we have a very large 1:1 initiative, the largest in our state. We have allowed students limited space on the file servers but they're attempting to save their text books to their drives, as these are large PDFs, they're eating into the space. I certainly wish we had baked these files into the image, but since we did not, it's completely not viable to reimage our entire district (with our current deployment of 1:1's that could be 15,000 computers). I am able to copy these files via group policy but my login time shoots up to nearly 6 minutes, and that's with no traffic on the server while testing, so I'm concerned about doing that. I guess for now, we'll keep digging with what we've got.

Is this possible? I've restricted my C drive from students but I would like a local cache to be available for them to save to. Is this possible? We have a folder redirection policy that makes their home folders "always available offline" but I've heard some reports of errors with this (though I think some may be user error), I would like to be able to open up a folder on their local machine they could possibly save to. Thanks for any assistance.

Our technicians support over 1,000 workstations at any given location. They do not directly support their own servers or network at this time, though.

Proxy pac file. Our filters are on the DMZ, users can hit them from home. We filter all of our users external and internal. It's our device, so we want to dictate what users do with it.

Our biggest issue with 11 is that it doesn't work with a proxy (their new built-in web browser, which I'm fairly certain serves no purpose other than a bullet point on a presentation somewhere).

I think Android tablets as a whole are disappointing. I like my SGS3 phone, it's better than the previous Galaxy S phones, in my opinion as I've owned each, but their tablets have always left me a little angry.

Sorry, being an American, I've got to respond. Since I was growing up, OMG has always meant just that, oh my God. It never meant oh my gosh, or oh my goodness. It's always meant oh my God. You'll find the conservatism of America is going out the window with each passing generation. Prior to just recently, the FCC could fine stations for showing nudity and curse words. That was ruled unconstitutional recently, but I'm sure there's other ways the federal government will enforce the rules they wish on cable television. I understand the regulations on public broadcast, but not on cable broadcast where customers pay for the channels. Also, the remakes are not because Americans can't "understand" your shows. We're not morons. In fact, you'll find many of us watch BBC to see shows like Top Gear, and I've found the IT Crowd on Netflix to be moderately funny. Much like our English is different, we also have very different senses of humor. It doesn't mean we're idiots. I thought the American version of the Office was very well done. I can't say the same for the American version of Top Gear, which I've never watched. You'll also find many broadcast companies attempting to remake these shows because they want to hit the air big with an American show and take in a lot of money with their own "original" series, not pay licensing fees to show the shows in the US.

Definitely different in the US. I get carded a lot. It's more of a surprise when I'm not carded.

We have 1:1 and use accidental damage coverage since students handle the computers all day, every day. Get it, it's well worth the cost.

We initially synced our users up with AD, but had to set all of the passwords to a default. Google has released some tools that allow it to sync up with AD and grab the passwords from there, without the need for separate passwords, which would be quite handy. It should have still pulled from AD for the new users, but it's stopped even doing that, so I assume it's broken. This was all set up by an outside contractor, due to the amount of users we have, so we're going to have to dig into it and fix it. @ZeroHour - definitely a lot of mailboxes. For the students alone it's about 40,000 users in Google Apps Gmail, then we have about 4,500 mailboxes in Exchange 10. Good stuff.

We use Google Apps. No complaints, just make sure you sync it up with your AD, unless you enjoy resetting passwords for end on end. Although, I'm assuming academy is the equivalent to an American high school? So that may only be 1,500 users tops. I've got 44,000 users in our Google Apps, so resetting passwords is a ton of joy, until we can get the AD sync fixed. Can't speak for Office365. We use Google's e-mail services for our students (rest of staff uses Exchange). No complaints for us. Google's services uptime is pretty much 100% since we've been using it for the past school year. There's basically never an interruption to service. E-mail is always up, etc. Their customer support is top-notch as well and answers the phone in near record time for a tech company.

If you lived in the US under US carriers, I could only recommend iPhone, since Samsung and the carriers NEVER update the Galaxy phones in the US. Also cannot stand the battery life on Androids, but that's another story. I do like my Galaxy SII, but I will never buy another Samsung after what they've done with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and never updating it, instead releasing an entirely new model with the same specs.

I use a batch file to set up file servers exactly like we want, initialize offline disks, format them, create the shares, enumerate shares, set up quotas, etc.

I just truly think Windows 8 is going to be a flop, especially in the enterprise world. Vista adoption rates were basically 0 in the enterprise world, and I honestly feel like 8 will meet that same fate. To me, it's an entirely different paradigm, one that requires re-teaching teachers and students that have already learned Windows XP or 7. Those are all evolutions, the new version is more of a revolution.

Yeah, our images are pretty base, and they include huge driver repositories so we can support the hundreds of different models we have. I'm actually quite impressed with the work the guys have done with it. When we first started, we had an image for most of our major models, still better than Ghost, but nowhere near as streamlined as they've gotten it today. It's super fast. It's also super efficient. It may take 30 minutes, but it takes them all of 1 minute to get it started, so you can start entire buildings and walk away.

I tell you what, it's been so long since I've been out in the field. I just asked one of our field engineers and he told me he thinks it takes about 30 minutes. That's booting into SCCM, selecting your image (we're down to 2 images that cover every system in the district), renaming the computer with a pop-up prompt, downloads the image, applies the image, then runs through the task sequence of installing some of our main items like Office 2010, Chrome, VLC, Sophos, etc. Then it joins the computer to the domain. When I was in the field, we were just getting this stood up. We had used Ghost before hand. This was pretty much the greatest thing since sliced bread (not sure if that's just an American saying). We could basically walk through a lab, boot up, hit F12, pick an image, and walk away. Come back whenever and the computers would have reimaged themselves and would be sitting on the login screen ready to go. Very handy. I'm more on the server side these days, so I still deal with SCCM, but mostly just the maintenance of the boxes it's housed on.

Use a clean, base image, that way you'll always have a base to go to. We use SCCM, so we have clean images, but then we have the software that deploys as well.

The ZuneHD used to dominate. I don't know if it still does, but the audio quality was always considered much better than the iPods. That said, audiophile is pretty overrated, and it's pretty hard for most people to even tell a difference.

You can jailbreak iOS for the same thing. I don't know what you guys work with all day, but I personally don't have the will or want to root all of my devices, flash random ROMs on them, see what works and what doesn't work, etc. I work all day in tech... just not the biggest fan of constantly tinkering with technology all day. I deal with enough with 20,000+ computers and 45,000 users... but that's just me.

All of the Android tablets run a customized Android OS. I put 4.0.3 on mine and it works much better than Honeycomb. There's not many tablet optimized applications for Android either. Just not a fan. The experience is much better on my iPad than my Android tablet.
