TV res - 1080i v 1080p

Hi guys

 

Just a quick one, if I buy a new tv, how important is it that I buy either 1080i or 1080p?

 

Sorry been a bit lazy and not googled this for long.

1080p definately, dont even bother with 1080i, just bought a new tv myself from comet, 50" LG Plasma with 3D fro 599pound, nice deal.

i - just stands for interlaced, where the image is 1080 however is shown on screen line by line, or up and down.

 

i dont like interlaced because when you see or watch a fast scene on the TV you can see each line as the TV isnt fast enough. (look at the pic on here: Interlaced video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

If you have Sky TV, I'd advise to get an LG TV's. I have a Panasonic 1080p Plasma and my brother in law has aLG 1080p Plasma and the difference to my surprise is different. The LG one picture and colour quality was fantastic, as well as the smoothness of HD programming quality if you know what I mean. Just much much better in my opinion.

 

But yeah, if you have Sky I would recommend purchasing an LG TV.

I would have thought that your brother in law's TV is just a better quality picture overall, shouldn't really make a difference whether you have Sky or not (which outputs at 1080i maximum by the way). LG do make some fantastic TV's I must say.

I is interlaced and is basically 2x 540 lines alternating up and down to produce a picture.

 

P is progressive and is 1080 lines starting from the top 1 at a time going down the screen.

 

P is better than I but as mentioned before there are many factors that make a good picture. Also I just bought a small tv for our house and had to take it back because the speakers were $*1t! I couldnt put up with how poor the sound. make sure the speakers are man enough to produce a decent sound.

Sky are (or were) giving money back for LG Tvs, my dad got 200pound back from SKY for buying a LG tv beacuse its Energy efficent. i would look into it because i dont know if there still running the offer, but thats not to be sniffed at

As a general rule, I'd recommend 1080p for TV's 32" or larger. You won't notice this difference on smaller TVs.

 

Most HDMI devices on the market will support 1080i and slowly 1080p is becoming the norm, until in a few years Super HD will come out. I believe it'll be 4 x 1080p quality wise.

I'm after a 42 (poss 50) plasma screen, to be linked to blu-ray (via hdmi) and just bog standard freeview. Currently have a Samsung 32 LCD 720p and was hoping to fully utilise the blu-ray quality. Like the idea of Plasma for getting better 'blacks', so i understand?

I would recommended Panasonic every time, you only have to read the numerous reports/tests online especially the plasma models if you are really into your films, deep blacks etc

I'll recommend a LED not a plasma if you can strech that far, was looking in pc world the other week and all the plasmas looked extremlly dull, while the LED lokked much more detailed and crisp plus nice and bright!

Go into the shop, ask for the remotes and reset all the settings - they fiddle with them to make one TV look better than another, or they just plain don't know how to set up TVs. Then make your mind up on what you like. Picture "quality" is subjective; as some people will say a brighter picture is better quality...

 

As said there is very little out in 1080p atm, no broadcast TV at all and afaik no games either, even blu rays are very limited. BUT just get a 1080p as afaik there isn't any new TVs out which are not 1080p - assuming you are getting a TV over 28''.

 

One thing to be aware of also it the shiny coating they are putting on TVs now. My mate has just bought a top spec Samsung plasma as he was wowed by the "shiny shiny" but got home and realised he can't have his front room lights switched on or else he gets reflections on his brand new expensive TV lol

Surprising, as Panasonic still put proper on/off switches on their tellies as opposed to LG's where the majority can still only be turned off into standby (unless you're one of those who turn it off at the 'leccy socket.)

I Agree with MYK, the LG's are good, but to me the Rolls Royce are Panasonic. Add to the fact Panasonic have the Pioneers Kuru technology for plasma screens to.

 

You might find some featues on other TV's that you may not see on the Panasonic, but the Panny is more likely to still be working in 6 years. Both the caretakers at our school have chatted to TV repair men, and both have been given the same answer when asked what is the most reliable brand, Panasonic, they claimed to rarely go wrong. Infact when one of them spilt water down the back of the 50" Panasonic Plasma (reason for engineer to come out, about 3 years ago), the TV repair guy said this is the first Panasonic he has had to repair as they generally do not go wrong. The other guy when coming out for the 3rd time to his Toshiba TV said go Panasonic to, this was shortly after Samsung released the LED TV's and was told do not go near them were going out to at least 1 a day the reliability is awful, though i am guessing the technology may have matured a bit since then.

 

My sister in law got a 42" LG LED TV this week, and just seen the picture tonight, its awful. Non HD picture was at best bad. I would never get anything but plasma once i get above 32", plus i prefer the blacks on them.

I don't think you can tar all LEDs with the same brush, it was probably just a crap LED - LG aren't exactly a top make tbf. Agree I prefer the picture on a plasma, but for its smoothness, the blacks on LEDS are by far the best of the 3 technologies, but like said, its subjective.

I've had my 37" 1080i TV about 5 years and never noticed any blurring. I've got Virgin HD, stand alone blu-ray player, PS3 and always a good picture. Although when I upgrade I will go 1080p LED though. But there is also many other factors when buying a TV.
