We use HP at a lot of our sites, I hope they dont pull out of the networking market! i enjoy install\playing with the procurve stuff!

Networking is part of the enterprise storage and services division, along with their servers.

Also, they haven't actually said that they'll be 'selling' the division yet. They've said they're looking at many options, including spinning it off as its own company. Maybe they could call this company 'Compaq'? or 'DEC'? :)

Focus on software. Right. Because they're so good at software. I mean, their printer drivers are some of the most streamlined and reliable in the industry...

Yes, this is actually true. We've never had any problems with HP printer drivers at all.

Yup, agreed. We have a bunch of HP printers in this school all using the universal printer drivers and I've not a single problems.

So, their drivers are pretty good.

I've had issues with Brother, Ricoh and Epson drivers though at times.

For any of you claiming not to have trouble with HP print drivers: if you can tell me how to get the UPD to work with point & print on Windows 7 without adding 30-45 seconds to the login time, I will actually pay you monies.

(I also refer you to this thread and the similar ones linked from it for an example of how bad HP print drivers can be.)

Not sure about the extra logon lag as we deploy using either script in the background async or using GPP at the machine level. We also use the UPD at three sites and it is great, no issues in comparison to the filth that Minolta, brother, Ricoh or even Xerox.

I'd much rather that they kept making hardware though.

Not used that, but that is a single use case for a new technique of printing - not exactly ubiquitous.

Again, a single model of printer does not cover the hundreds of models of printers they have produced. Not to mention a very cheap model at that - that old saying 'buy cheap, buy twice' comes to mind!

Never been a fan of their Laptops / Workstations - been in my new job now almost 5 months - have had to deal with so many HP failed laptops it's un-true.

Their Servers I have the up most respect for.

Their CarePaqs are a joke - they have sent to me two weeks ago a replacement HD for a laptop - which was also faulty. Then I wanted an on-site engineer to replace a MB and they said that was not possible.....so I asked them to repeat back to me 10 times a certain line of their warrenty which read - ' on site engineer ' - they got the picture and sent an engineer.

I do hope HP just break off the PCs section into a subsidiary or something similar - I just wouldn't want to see Dell become the #1 in the Windows PC world again.

Never had a problem with any HP kit - its all HP servers, printers and switches here and a mix of Acer and HP for the Laptops/Desktops and I wouldn't want to touch any other kit with a barge pole.

A new technique of printing? Are you referring to point and print here? Because that's pretty much the standard method of sharing printers on a server.

I've changed my mind - in all honesty - I don't really give a crap about HP. I don't really give a crap about any company who build and sell PCs / Laptops - face it, they are all built as cheaply as possible and are complete and utter rubbish. The only good element is that we have a job because of it.

Have I been drinking this evening ? You bet I have.....

Ok, just checked that term and it is not a term I've used or seen anyone use then... However, we use the UPD for all our HP printers with no added delays at login. All printers are still installed via script on login, and it just works.

Does the script run asynchronously? GPP only works synchronously and so makes the user wait until its finished before they get to the desktop.

To be honest I've only got 2 printers that I'm forced to use the UPD with (old models with no native Vista/7 drivers), and they'll both be gone soon. All my other printers just work - including the other HP ones actually, ever since I switched to only using the drivers from Windows Update instead of the ones from HP. After years of dealing with stupid HP driver issues (having all users suddenly get the 'mirrored output' tickbox turned on by default was my favourite) I'm really just bitter and tired.

Well, my HP laptop has gone west, I suspect the blast furnace that is the Nvidia GPU has burned its way down to the earth's core.

I found this forum: Index page • The Nvidia Defect Forum

I bought the laptop from Staples, and even though it's been almost 3 years, Staples told me to get a technician's report on the laptop and they'll give me something towards a new laptop if the report concludes that it's due to an inherent defect!

I should know by the end of the week... fingers crossed...

I don't think I'll get another HP.....

I don't see why you wouldn't really. If it is the NVIDIA graphics chip problem that I'm thinking of (screen just goes black but the rest of the system starts), it isn't really HP's fault - its NVIDIA's. My work MacBook Pro had the same issue, and they then fixed the logic board on it and said they'd be fixing it even if it was out of warranty too.

Also, HP have specifically since came out and said they have at no time said they're leaving the PC market, just that they're looking at all options of what to do with their PC division, whether that means spinning it off, selling it off or keeping it as is, they've made no decisions.

What the hell are they thinking. I guess they could sell off the hardware arm but I fear another IBM like deal where the quality of the equipment rapidly approaches zero.

Are you referring to current Lenovo kit? Got quite a few here and they're fine and at a fraction of the price of the equivalent Dell or HP :D

I would be interested if this works as i have a broken compaq presairo f700 which after some research it seems to be a faulty GPU chip. Has anybody else had any luck with PC world repacing/giving something towards a new laptop?
