HP quitting the PC market

I would be interested if this works as i have a broken compaq presairo f700 which after some research it seems to be a faulty GPU chip. Has anybody else had any luck with PC world repacing/giving something towards a new laptop?

Are you referring to current Lenovo kit? Got quite a few here and they're fine and at a fraction of the price of the equivalent Dell or HP

 

This is with all of the Lenovo boxes I have dealt with, from about 3-4 years ago. Unless they have shot the retasked counterfitters who designed them publicly as an example I don't see how they could have got better as much as they needed to.

 

Choking on different types of standard memory, bogging down thanks to trash drivers. PXE Booting that required action within 10 seconds of boot before it crashed. Drivers that are practically impossible to find thanks to their insane modle nimbering and awefull site. Lack of drivers for new OSs. Gigs of extra IBM cruft. BIOSs that fault out when reading the last power state and so boot into the alternate sequence every third time. Systems that were just plain slow despite being built with much faster hardware than others.

 

BIOS updates that fault out and kill motherboards, aweful keyboards and although its probably because NZ is just a rubbish country horrible service.

 

 

I would rather buy Dell than Lenovo and as above HP and their retarded CEO have clarified/revised their statment to reassure everyone that the PC arm would be sticking around which is a good move. If they ditch the PC line they will be removed from my list of suppliers for anything.

From the way I read it HP are first to withdraw from the Consumer Market which lets face it they have never been big in and as has been stated elsewhere the Q uality dubious of some models.

 

The corporate desktops 4000, 5800, 6000, 8000 have all been fantastic boxes and may well stay around for some years to come.

 

Nearly all of these come out of the Foxcon factories in China anyway, so maybe HP just want the Chinese to do a Lenovo on them and take over all of the end to end process like IBM and just give them a kick back for using the Brand name.

 

Personally I dont have an issue with Lenovo kit they went through a bad patch like everyone with dodgy capacitors letting them down but we have Thinkpads still going well where some of the newer Korean kit would have fallen to bits in 13 months.

 

I think all of the messing about with Gen1 and Gen2 I3,5 &7's has caused manufacturing and marketing headaches in the last few years and this hasnt helped sales especially in the midst of a recession.

 

I hope they dont pull out completely, at least keep the core corporate desktop business going as the choice is getting less and less every year it will be a shame to end up with a one Dell horse race in the desktop market prices will spiral out of control without healthy competition.

I don't see where you're getting that from - they have specifically stated they have made no decisions regarding their PC division. Specifically, the UK PC Division boss Paul Hunter sent an open email around stating "Let me be absolutely clear in saying that at no stage has HP said it is quitting the PC business. Three options are being investigated, and whether the company is spun off, sold or kept in the HP portfolio, the team in the UK remains committed to creating and supporting great products and services."

 

They have not decided to withdraw from consumer market or any market, other than cancelling the tablets and sidelining WebOS a bit.

I don't see where you're getting that from - they have specifically stated they have made no decisions regarding their PC division.

 

As I said - "the way I read it" and taken from the HP Website, the Statement only refers to the PSG part of the business not the Enterprise and as you have quite rightly pointed out in the UK at least there is what amouts to a total rebuff of the origional statement made by HP from Paul Hunter head of the UK PSG.

 

What seems to be clear is that whoever prepared that statement had not discussed it in any detail with the PSG Group first which would possibly have avoided the PR disaster this has turned into. (Reading some of the posts in this thread you would have thought HP had gone into administration).

 

Just because IBM did it and made it work I think thats very much the same conclusion that half of the world IT Press jumped on to, much to the cost of HP at a time when the stock markets were already in turmoil.

 

They have a lot of money to make up, the Palm aquisition, Tablet nightmare, Seagate HDD issues and other ventures that have not turned out as well as they might have hoped.

 

If they have to spin off anything, Consumer PC's and Laptops to somebody like Acer might well be an option, but didnt Acer do a similar thing with Gateway. What happend to that partnership?

 

HP are still one of the worlds largest PC suppliers (I nearly said makers but that is probably not actually the case as almost every thing is made by Foxconn) and if by dumping those really tacky £299 in PC World machines it gets them out of the doggy do it will be a smart move.

Now - should I trust another HP or Compaq (of which they have quite a few different models) or plump for a Toshiba or Samsung?

 

Moral of the story - buy from Staples!

Allways preferred Dell support. They don't ask silly standard questions when you speak to enterprise/server support, and then go away, ask someone and ask even more stupid questions.

I've had good service from hp laptops so I guess as with all providers it depends on the model, the batch and your location as to how good or bad they really are.

 

Support for anything other than hp is that bad here that I don't the other companies even have a copy of the word in their dictionary.
