Two shows I can highly recommend so far:

The Killing - adapted from a Danish (I think) story about a girl who is murdered and each episode follows a day in the investigation. Very well made, acting is very good too.

Game of Thrones - Quite a few English actors in this and superbly made. Only watched two episodes so far but it looks amazing and really getting into it.

I've been told Boardwalk Empire is meant to be very good too (has Steve Buscemi in) but haven't got around to watching that yet.

Are there any others people could recommend...outside of the usual sci-fi/copshow stuff

Game of Thrones is really good - I thought it was a bit slow at the beginning, but it's really picked up pace now! The tricky bit is learning who all the characters are..!

Spartacus is also great - and as Hightower says, it's not pron, it's just a scene in a tv show...!

It is brilliant but I'm surprised you couldn't tell it was Swedish! Did you not do that at school. :)

The Killing is Danish. Based in Copehagen. If you remember, Sarah Lund had a new job in Stockholm but kept putting it off because of the investigation.

The characters were excellent, as were the twists and turns. I'd suspected Vagn from early on but there were so many red-herrings I was never sure.

Apparently, there's a new series in the Autumn.

How about the Shadow Line? Only one episode to go and I'm still non the wiser!

Well, I guess I don't need to watch it now!

My Bad MK-2 and lazerblazer! I only did Welsh in school.

I watched it all and knew that but my head was thinking of "The Girl with the dragon tattoo" which I watched recently.

no need to apologise to me, i only knew it was adapted from Danish from a review, not because I'd seen the original. So I still have no idea who committed the murder in the American version and do not want to know outside of the program :)

Sorry about that but to be honest, it didn't really matter who did it, still well worth watching if it's on again. If it's an Amercanised version, they'll change the plot completely anyway.

Spartacus - it's 1000x better than babestation, and I can happily watch it without a guilt trip from the missus! ;)

I showed my porn mad mate it last night and I think he'll be watching every episode from now on!

I felt seriously bereft when The Killing (Danish original) finished, everything about it was refreshing: slow-burn atmosphere; the most believable characters I've seen in a long while (last time I was similarly struck by that was the opening scenes in the film Alien); not something cheesy from US; not another sad UK imitation of something cheesy from US; understated, or rather not massively overstated. Sofie Gråbøl was excellent, but for that matter so was most everyone else.

If it's an Amercanised version

Eeek... they remade it?!? Much of the of the joy of the original is that **it let us imagine** what folk were thinking while gazing into eyes that for once looked like someone actually lived behind them, as opposed to to blatantly spelling everything out 10 times over in the equivalent of single syllable words written in large capital letters. Have they ever merkanized anything European and made it better?

It's kind of passed me by, are the "The Girl With..." films any good?

The Girl With films are very good, but make your eyes feel funny if you watch the dubbed version because the audio on the DVD is not very well synched up, ie people still talking when there lips stopped moving 30seconds ago, stuff like that, but watch it in the original with subs and they are brilliant

To be honest, I think it's a pile of crud. I only watch it for the obvious softcore. I think the storyline is starting to simplify out and you're getting a picture of what is actually going on but the first few episodes, the storyline seemed so convoluted that I didn't have a clue. BTW I also watched Lost and uderstood most of that storyline.

Personally I think Camelot is way better. Not convinced by Joseph Fiennes as Merlin (just the look of him, not his acting ability).

EDIT: Also a plus one to House and The Walking Dead.

Blasphemy!!!

Watch tonight: something happens that I really wasn't expecting.

Interesting that some of the people here have been commenting on the gratuitous T&A. On IMDb people are trying to claim that the flesh is absolutely integral to the plot (or that if you find it gratuitous you must be some sort of prude/damn commie).

I'll be watching it but only because I'm curious as to what's gonna happen.

I do think there is way too much t&a. I think that because Spartacus got away with it, most new tv shows seems to be trying it.

Game of Thornes is EPIC! It gets better after every episode! T watched the last Ep yesterday and I think I know what your referring to @LeMarchand

And there can never be too much T&A in such programs. The more the better! ;)

Have to agree GoT is getting better and better, and started pretty good anyway (if a little confusing)! I can't wait to see yesterdays ep, are there only 2 left now?

Yea, 2 more, but it has been commissioned for another Series. I bought the book on the weekend and am reading it. Most shows like this cut bits of the book out or base the show very loosely around the book (Walking Dead for example - (Also another awesome show!!!)), but so far it's been 100% accurate. :)
