What would you do with £85 Million?

Retire, design and build the fiendishly geeky house I've been pondering for years, complete with Tony Stark style workshop/office and motorbike garage.

 

This is the way to do it. Stuff buying a house. Build a full on automated house that could one day rise and up and rule ALL HUMANITY!!!!!!! Or maybe adjust the lights, curtains and that kinda stuff. On second thought the latter is probably better.

 

On a more serious note, roughly the same as others. Get my sister & nephew a nice house, him a nice trust fund and some spending money for her. Rebuild my parents house as it is falling down. Sort a nice house for me somewhere. A chunk to various charities including a nice Scout Hut for my group. Sort out my Helicopter license and Fixed wing license. Place in Canada, probably West Country and then one Wales or Peak District. Go bum for a year diving in all those cool places. Learn to sail and get a nice boat. Hire a super yacht with helicopter pad and own wet dock for a month just to say I have.

 

Share a chunk with some close friends that have always been there.

 

Probably invest a chunk & set up or invest in some businesses that I have thought about, some serious, some not so much but it would be interesting to see if they work.

 

Mostly relatively modest stuff. I think with £85M you could make it last as long as you didn't do to many crazy things all at once. You buy a huge mansion and then have the up keep, staff & all the trappings to pay for.

 

As for working I always thought I would but then I think being super part time would make me loose interest and any time I'm working I would be thinking of the things I could be doing. Probably for a while just so I could have a tantrum and scream "I DON'T HAVE TO BE HERE YOU KNOW!!!!" :D

I probably would, but it'd be a different sort of work probably freelance or self employed doing something different, where I can pick and chose what I do and when. I would not want to be tied to a 9-5 job anymore.

Not work as such, I'd certainly do some sort of volunteering though at the local primary school and various other charities.

Add some classrooms and teachers to a school in S Africa. Improve the accommodation, facilities and food for the orphan's project. likewise for the other two projects there for the sick and elderly. the rest to my kids and enough for me to travel with camera.

I'd still work on interesting problems. But it would be of the "I wonder how easy it would be to build a self-landing drone with thermal imaging and terrain-following capability?". Anyone suggesting I fix their pedestrian IT systems would have the guard camels set upon them in an avalanche of phlegm.

I don't think I'd work in the same capacity I do now. I'd focus on something like charity work or similar instead. Maybe set up a charity that provides IT support to charities or something.

To start with I'd make sure all the rest of my family could also retire too but throwing each £1-2million...

 

Then I'd put the money in the bank to make interest and travel round the world for a few years....

 

Easy peasy... A relaxed approach and spend a nice month or so at each place to really get a feel for it...

 

Come back and I would have even more money :D

I'd probably still live quite a normal existence. Get a nice big house somewhere quiet near the coast with plenty of garage space and do up some cool modern classics. I can't say I'd go for the Ferraris like most lottery winners because I have super long legs and can't fit into them. I'd honestly be happy with a decent MGF and a Pug 205.

I read or heard an interview with a big lottery winner a while back and he said that being able to buy whatever you want wasn't the best thing about being so rich. The novelty of that bit wore off surprisingly quickly because after a while the buzz from spending large sums reduces somewhat.

 

It was having enough money that he didn't need to worry about any everyday problems that came up...like just being to call a plumber (he was very rich after all) whenever he needed to without worrying about the cost or being able to replace anything that broke down was what made life much more relaxing...

 

Having said all that...I would build my dream eco house near the coast with a tower so I could have a computer/playroom (same thing really) with 360 degree views....and a huge underground garage/workshop for my cars etc...

I'd go 'Minecraft' and have a tall tower built, with torches on the outside, and a staircase made from wool...

 

Hope you plan on surrounding that place in wind breakers, fire and wool do not a good combination make...

I'd put most of it into a charitable trust of some form, give some to my parents and brother (the prior would save it, the latter would go mad and spend it), and some of my friends.

 

I'd not actually want a huge amount of money myself. I'd want to have a house which I didn't have to pay mortgage on, learn to drive, and get a car (probably a smart car or maybe a fiesta). Probably spend a couple of years travelling the world, then settle down somewhere and get a job.

 

The rest would be invested half in high risk investments and half in a very low risk account, so I could dip into it to buy things like new computers and the like.

 

Not that I've thought about it at all...

 

Oh, and a boat. I'd want a boat.

 

Not that I've thought about it much...but like localzuk I'd be keeping 10-20 mil back to spend now and on various projects/properties (of course I'd be building the ultimate geeky house!)/cars/holidays/stuff with the remaining amount going into a various investments split between 2 or 3 private banks, and since £85 mil pushes you into ultra high net worth category you should get some banks very interested ;). I'd try to never touch the capital that's been invested, instead living off of a fixed percentage of the yearly income from the investments (somewhere between 10-50% dependant on returns!), with remaining interest being reinvested.

 

That would all be controlled by some form of trust to make it easier to pay money out to family/dependants etc. Ohh and I'd probably still continue working. I actually really like the work that I'm doing and find it interesting, but I would stop taking salary and get them to hire someone to sit below me so that if I decided I was going away for a few weeks there wouldn't be a problem ;)

 

I haven't though about it much of course :p

Wool is not very flammable.
