stebo730 Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 When I arrived in my present post I had to deal with the previous incumbent's Server Naming Strategy - Basically the Names of Star Wars Characters. Exchange Server - C3PO File Server - Luke Skywalker Domain Controller - Death Star Web Filer - Chewbacca This has obviously been longed changed to a more suitable Server Naming system that isn't embarrasing should a contractor be doing work on a system. We did toy with the idea of naming the servers after the members of Take That. This would have been restrictive as we would have needed to wait till autumn 2010 to install a 5th Server on the Domain. Not only that in 2008 we had problems with our Exchange Server which would have resulted in GaryBarlow going down alot! Anyone else had interesting servers naming conventions or have any good recommendations?

Chuckster Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 My 2 DCs were names after playgirls by my predecessor - Sydney Moon and Jessie Capelli! Initially I thought he named them after his exes but obviously not. The member servers were named after all the Matrix characters. I had a real hard time understanding which server did what. I've now standardized them such as schoolinitial-dc-00x for DCs and schoolinitials-sr-00x for all member servers.

"God's says that he can't communicate with St Peter ...." This is from my old RM tech support days ... I will admit to being old enough to have supported 380Z, 480Z's - before moving on to product manage all of RM's Networks upto and inluding RM Net 3 ... for which I humbly apologise for all the hurt inflicted!) 1

Arcath Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 because my primaries only tend to have one or two servers I use the model eg. ml350g6 and ml110g6 etc... my personal servers and machines take use the names of planets and moons from firefly atm I have Londinium, Whitefall, Deadwood, Highgate, Constance and Three Hills.

We had : Escort Cortina Jag And a random one wich i loved THOR It was like the main file server that every stored there data on and was like a massive giant spec of a server so i decided to name it Thor =]

But just to be consistent I've also re-named my family TIM-WIF-001, TIM-KID-001 & TIM-KID-002. It'll be so much easier to identify them in a hurry now.
