When I arrived in my present post I had to deal with the previous incumbent's Server Naming Strategy - Basically the Names of Star Wars Characters.

 

Exchange Server - C3PO

File Server - Luke Skywalker

Domain Controller - Death Star

Web Filer - Chewbacca

 

This has obviously been longed changed to a more suitable Server Naming system that isn't embarrasing should a contractor be doing work on a system.

 

All of ours are named after star wars characters, and most contratcors find it funny and is in no way emabrrising. In fact its made our life a million times easier, the used to be called XXX-01 etc and staff/students could never remember the names of servers. Its much easier for them to remember an error message about Yoda rather than XXX-01

Never been a fan of random naming conventions - I don't buy the security through obscurity argument, so to that end, everything I set up is [sITEID]*-DC01, [sITEID]-MIS01 or [sITEID]-Cab1-Switch1 or whatever. It takes a bit more forethought, and sometimes dual role servers need some thinking about but I much prefer it overall.

 

*IMO, this can be anything or just leave it out altogether. I'm a fan of three letter acronyms here, so Margate Primary may be MAR, for example

In my old place we used to name them after a few old cars and stuff.

And a random one wich i loved

It was like the main file server that every stored there data on and was like a massive giant spec of a server so i decided to name it Thor =]

Recently I installed a server to take over all roles at one of my sites called Vetinari. It confuses a LOT of staff

I use a mixture, like our 3 domain controllers are named after the 3 olympic class ships (Olympic, Titanic, Britannic), but others like our file servers are called UFS-(Year of entry) or UFS-(Department). Its which ever works better for that role.

One school I worked at used Simpsons names. That's how it was when I started and I carried on the tradition. Wiggum was the firewall, the smallest physically was Maggie and then there was Mr Burns - it became very belligerent! When I left, Bart, Lisa, Homer and Marge were all generation 3, new hardware but same names. Where I work now, we use Star Trek names, but they have to be on the official Star Trek list and be Federation officers, so no Klingons allowed. I argue Bem should be, but the boss won't have it, I think because he doesn't know who Bem is. Another place I worked, used names of Greek gods and goddesses, and yet another place chemical elements. It's all good fun but it makes identifying the servers difficult. I like FS1, FS2, etc for file servers, LDAP, MAIL, DC, etc.

Just go with xxxdc1, xxxdc2 and so on here, don't like stupid names for them.

 

Once heard of a recording studio who'd had a tech in to set their network up, and called all the servers "penis" and "vagina" and the like. On a professional job. Idiot.
