burgemaster Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 This may sound harsh but one specific ICT Suite is getting vandalised and littered regularly by unsupervised students at lunch time.. We have reporting it numberous amounts of times does not help so I would like to see if there is anything I can do myself? Could all student logins be restricted for one room during a certain time of the day? I just moved a student on who had moved the mouse/keyboard and had a FULL sunday roast out on the desk!!

powdarrmonkey Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 As usual, this is a (proposed) technical solution to a social problem. SMT have to come down hard on people who abuse the suite, and in the meantime just lock the door. Why spend time cooking up a software solution?

If the kids aren't even using the computers (eg the one with the roast dinner!) then making them unavailable won't help. If anything it could make it worse - you'll have people poking at things to try and make them work etc. You've got to get the kids out of the room or make sure they're properly supervised if they really have got to be in that room - it's not acceptable for them to be behaving in this way.
glennda Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Agree with powdarrmoney and srochford. All out IT rooms are locked at lunchtime/when not in use. Enless a member of staff is present. If we find a teaching leaving there classroom open to students then we kick up a fuss - and tbh its them that suffer as they cannot use all the equipment in there classrooms during lessons becuase kids have broken it. We have also removed all tutor groups from our IT Rooms (bar 1 which is Head of ITs and 6th form tutor of 12 kids!) As we found that it tended to be during these times that they where vandalised most - by non IT teaching staff.

James. Was going to suggest Logon Hours too but as a few peeps have said, it's not really an IT problem. If they are really annoying you though I think Logon Hours would give you some satisfaction, it'd just be a case of how do you target it to those that abuse it.
Gibbo Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Restricting the machines won't stop the vandalism. If they can't log on they could just smash up the equipment anyway. Make sure the door is locked, report any staff to SMT who aren't locking it and maybe get a cheap camera set up in there.

Is it because you don't consider PCs electrical? Or that it is safe for students to use them unsupervised? I would hate to be in your shoes if one of your little 'angels' decided to pour a bottle of water into the PC, and electrocuted themselves...

If the room is left unlocked you can guarantee somebody will walk off with a mouse or rearrange the keyboard letters etc. We have just implemented CCTV in the worst affected rooms so will see if catching a few of them will deter the rest Edited February 17, 2011 by witch

Specific laws are bad laws; it is up to local policy to decide how students are supervised and under what conditions they may use equipment. Health and safety law indicates you must ensure that equipment provided is: suitable for the intended use safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and, in certain circumstances, inspected to ensure this remains the case used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training
Sheridan Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 We had similar problems here so we started locking the rooms. Then we found staff (many have the keys) unlocked them to let students in to do 'research' or 'homework' (ie play games and eat their dinner) so we gave up. I voiced my concerns for several years, ultimately I gave up. If SLT think its acceptable to pay for repairs/cleaning etc then its up to them
