As above really...I'm finding we're needing to clean some of our projectors monthly all of a sudden, lest they overheat..this seems a tad excessive..

I'm chatting to our site manager about the air circulation system here...I'm wondering if it's distributing cack all over the shop all of a sudden...blocking the filters. It's a possibility..

in my limited experiance the dust filters do not cach all of the dust and other vents and holes etc allowing dust and muck in so it may be a problem with large amounts of dust actualy in the projector colecting and stoping air flow or causing over heating might be worth giving it a good blow out with compresed air. thats what we do because other wise our equipment gets verry cloged even when we clean filters regularly.

We clean ours abought once a term unless its in a perticularly dusty place such as tech.

I was told at a recent training course from Epson, that projectors should never be cleaned with compressed air.

All it does is blows the dust into the inside of the projector.

In the past I have just blasted the filter with compressed air and blasted all the little holes on the projector to get rid of the dust, but apparently all this does is blows the dust inside the projector and then when it turns on it melts the dust onto the colour wheels and leaves a shadow on the image.

Not sure how much truth there is in this, but I haven't used compressed air on a projector since.

Removed filters, blasted with compressed air outside, and then refitted. Any dust on the outside of the projector just brush it off.

The trainer told us we should use a vacuum cleaner, but one of our techs did some research and apparently mains powered vacuum cleaners should not be used on any electronic equipment due to static, so only hand held ones can be used, which we don't have.

Not sure how much truth there is in that either...

well i would be concernd abought static build up in a hand held hover as it is not grounded :s. and it may be worth taking the bulb out and blowing the dust out rather than in this works well for us. and it may also be worth checking the fans are running corectly.

When I walk past one and there's a big "CLEAN FILTER" message on the whiteboard.

Admit it, you just reset the clean filter usage meter and walk off:p

Us, we clean em when the bulb explodes....

Hmm...I take our filters off and out of the room before air-dusting the things, but STILL they seem to overheat and the filters are WELL AND TRULY clogged up in under a month...

Either the kids are shedding, the cleaners are running no filters on their vacuums, or the air system in this place is moving dust from A to B to C...

Shouldn't be a problem. It has anti-static carbon fibre brushes so there should not be much static generated, if any.

My techy goes round on a cycle and cleans them all, obviously if they come up sooner than the cycle, which is usually every half term, they get done but we are about on top of those rapid users.

We used to do it quite infrequently but I want to get into a regular pattern.

I knocked up a spreadsheet with all of our rooms listed and the date the projector cleaned. It then works out in a traffic light system and colour codes the room with green <50 days, amber <75 days and red 76> days.

It certainly gives us at at a glance easy view on which projectors need cleaning etc.

Hi I am looking for some kind database that I can recored all projectors make and model, bulb info etc. I would also like ot to be able to report when they need cleaning ie red lights!! I think the best bit would be to produce a report.

Thanks

I clean ours once a month and the one in the home economics room gets soaked in fairy liquid to clean off the grease. I also make sure that all users know to switch the projectors off at the remote (not the mains) to let them cool down properly. And guess what? In the 3 years I have been here we haven't had to replace a single bulb in the school touch wood.

I'm glad to see the amount of people that never clean their filters.

I've had my Mitsubishi up for over 8 months now, no cleaning/maintenance at all. Works like a charm!

Just done some back of fag packet calculations, for the number of projectors we have that would cost us over £5k per year in staff time alone cleaning them every month!

depends on how dusty the filters are. if theyre very dusty, it can overheat the projector and shortens the life of the bulb.

we have 18 of the orange sanyo promethean projectors in our school and some went very dark with blue and pink on the whiteboard. we replaced the lamps, no joy and our rep told us we needed new projectors.

They just needed a deep clean and they turned out as good as new. only found this out after buying 3 new projectors. The company we sourced called in to the school and did them on site for us.

Thats what happens here! Since I started this year ive wrote up a list and date each time one has been cleaned and counter reset, plan to do it once every other month where possible (some such as the halls and drama room with a very high celiing I can't get near)
