Car free life?

After this morning's drive in I said to my manager (who takes the same route) that a new/used bike is top of the to do list now...

 

Anyone got a bike they don't want???

What’s wrong with not having a car then for the rare times you need to get somewhere fast using a Taxi or a friend?

 

It’s perfectly possible to live just fine without a car and often better for your bank account and better for you health. I know lots of people who live without a car and I plan to join the ranks apart from on Sundays.

Look, my post was mostly tongue-in-cheek!

 

The thing is.....Some people would like a car-free life, and some wouldn't. If we were all the same........ blah, blah, blah!

 

I said earlier in the thread, that I lived pretty happily for a few years in London without a car, BUT, as I live in the middle of nowhere, it would be completely impracticable for me. Especially with a 6 year old son. Now, the choice to live where we do was a conscious choice....Knowing that my son will grow up with fields all around, rather than in a city or a town, makes a world of difference.

 

If people are happy to use public transport, then fair play to them, they are welcome to it. I, however, won't!

Brilliant bit of kit. I had one 15 or so years ago. I put a Ford V6 in mine along with some Vauxhall Carlton front seats and painted it black, white, grey and flourescent pink camouflage. Great fun.

 

Ohhh nice. Any pics? Started painting mine Tangier Orange, to look a bit G4 but I'm thinking something else might suit & that sounds gorgeous. Was thinking a battleship dazzle scheme but considering that was devised to confuse onlookers of size, speed and direction I've decided that probably isn't for the best!

standing at a bus stop waiting for a bus in -1 temps, no thanks. I would cycle (make that have cycled) but there are no showers or decent places to change at work. Its a nice ride, few hills but I think a new bike is needed that is much lighter but yes I could go for a car free working week.

People get this out of your head about having a shower. I used to cycle 1hour and not have a shower!! You could just wash the smelly bits also use panniers it really helps not having a bag on your back. I currently cycle to the station 20min wearing shirt and trouser for work.

Town = 5 mins walk

Hospital = 300 yards (which is the only place I would need to get to fast, but there is always an ambulance lol)

Work = 750 yards (ish)

 

Family = 420 miles away, but hey you have to make sacrafices. If heavens above, one of my parents carks it yep may take about 8 hours to get there, but lets face it when you've croaked theres nowt you can do about it....

If I had everything around, like that, then I'd do without a car too! And, to be honest, a train WOULD (probably) get you the 420 miles to your family, quicker than a car could. (As long as they live near a station too )

 

My family are only 120 miles away, but I know that when my Dad went into hospital, before Xmas, I had only 1 choice. Spend 2 hours in the car? Or spend closer to 3-3 1/2 hours on public transport. The journey from Suffolk to Northants is not well catered for by British Rail/ National Express!

if i could live without a car i would but it just isnt feasable 3 sites a day and i live 40+ miles from the city i work in. driving no fun anymore too many idiots on the road and not enough tarmac its all holes

Never learned to drive, don't want to learn. I have always found it my responsibility to live within a walkable distance to any workplace. I cannot stand the "cars broken down" or the "bus was late" excuse, just boils my urine lol.

 

and yet increasingly, the job market and employers demand people able to travel to where the work is. That's especially true if the organisation you work for has a wide geographic spread.... you could be lucky enough to have an IT employer whose base/head office is in your home town/city. But your employer could have clients all over the country.

 

i love the idea of people living within walking distance of their place of work, not disrupted by the onslaught of outsourcing and increasingly demands for flexibility from employers that includes travel, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

I was lucky, I chose to work close to where I live. No car. Don't need one. Don't want one. Owned a motorbike for many years which I used only only on weekends for pleasure but have recently given up riding it.

even where people have those things in place. access to emails, im, video conferencing ....often they choose not to use them to replace a lot of the unproductive travelling to and fro. maybe something to do with them wanting the face-to-face interaction with colleagues and/or customers as a means of breaking up the monotony of a daily existence in front of a computer screen. Or simply that they have a more traditional [outdated?] attitude to work ethic, which tells them it isn't work if they don't get up at the crack of dawn...spend an hour in traffic, a 40-mile round trip for a three hour meeting, whereas the alternative ways of communicating without an office or base doesn't feel like work to them. Or it could just simply be that they like claiming the mileage.

 

i think it's a bit of all three.

the peoblem with working from home for me is working from home you see nobody talk to nobody and i just tend to crank up the stereo do wht i need to then shove a dvd on its too easy to get distracted i find for more than the odd day
