Who has SNOW?!?!?

About an inch down this morning;that has mostly thawed. It is snowing now, but it isn't really settling.

All day yesterday we had flurries of little flakes. Then at 9pm it went down to -1 and we had a small blizzard. By 10 though, the temp was back up to 1 and this morning there is no snow or ice or anything. But the wind is awful and it feels very very cold (-7 according to metcheck)

Nothing to really speak about at 5pm last night when I drew the curtains - went to pick up my wife from work at 7:20pm, walked out the front door to be greeted by a good 2" of snow on the car! Doesn't look like much has fallen overnight here, but we are forecast a lot more later today. Temperature is due to hit -9 or -10 on Friday night, with a daytime swing of 17 degrees to +8 on Saturday. We were just saying, imagine if it was +2 or +3 degrees here now, and we had the same shift in temperature, we'd all be getting out shorts out as we'd be hitting the high teens! The weather is mad.

It started snowing here about 6pm last night and hadn't stopped at 11pm. Woke up this morning and it looks like it snowed most of the night. And its stil snowing at the moment. More snow is forecast for us today and into the night!

Well its not stopped snowing since 6pm lastnight so we're back up to several inches again Just measured a sheltered part of the garden where it hadn't thawed much and its 10 inches. Its all haily snow balls though, not real snow We are not expecting it to go above freezng until after teh weekend now so fun

 

Oh and its a snow day for us

My teenagers schools have just announced they are closing at lunch time. I think Tonbridge is closed from then on!

Well my mates just text us;

 

"Make sure you clean the snow off the roof of your car, a bloke I work with has just got 3 points for it" - good on you coppers! (Can't believe I've just said that).

 

One bloke yesterday was driving round in a discovery with roof rails holding on a good 6 inches of solid ice. Now I know that would be hard to get off but if he had had to brake hard it likely would have wiped out the car infront along with any passengers in the back seat.

Light snow at home 2 days ago, road lightly dusted. Yesterday AM, about an inch. Enough for MIL to call off childcare, so I stayed home with tiddly. This AM, about an inch again.

 

Roads - all OK with care, all clear mostly bar the immediate home roads (normal) and the immediate carpark here.

 

I'm getting "witty" comments from the staff about the fact my Astra is parked in the carpark with a blue fleecy blanket over the screen/front doors, and a rag under the rear wiper.

 

We'll see how funny it is later when I whip them off and drive with no de-snow/icing. Heh. I always clear the roof/windows before I move it anyway, but the blanket is ace!

It's the pedestrians who often get it when the car goes round a corner at any speed. 6 inches of snow sliding off a car roof straight into pedestrians standing kerbside waiting to cross. Not funny, potentially dangerous if said snow is solid ice.

Just went outside in the hope I can clear the car off to have a ride down to my parents. After the latest snow this morning we're now up to about 3 foot of snow. I could clear the car off, and although the snow is high it is compacted with other cars using the estate. The issue is, getting from my 'on the ground' position up to the height of the compacted snow. I could make a steady ramp up but goodness knows how long that will take. To top it off, I left my shovel outside and it now has more icicles on it than the house.

 

The main roads are pretty clear so if I could make it to them I would be ok.

 

When you look around the estate everyone's guttering is falling off, and I'm just sat here wondering how long it is until mine goes.

 

Oh, and it's started snowing again.

The issue is, getting from my 'on the ground' position up to the height of the compacted snow. I could make a steady ramp up but goodness knows how long that will take. .

 

Thats been my problem too. Managed to dig a path to my steep kerb, dropped the car down onto the road and before all 4 wheels got on there I was stuck. Had to get my brother out to give me a push. Even the binmen can't get up our street. One attempted it and ended up sliding all over the path as you cant see where the road ends. Once you're onto teh main roads its OK, well as OK as an ungritted road can be. F'in council are really starting to pish me off now - you've got grit, you said you've got loads of it this year, so F'in use it!!!!

 

Its still snowing here. Its stopped for a total of maybe 2 hours since 6pm last night. Bring on another snow day tomorrow

School closed early and closed tomorrow. We had Ofsted in so that has been abandoned.

We opened this morning after being closed yesterday, we then shut after lunch which was a sensible decision based on one area was bad with snow and another wasn't too bad but the risk was high, roads soon vanished under fresh white snow where the gritting had been limited.

 

What ever decision SLT make at present some people will agree with and some won't agree with so they are in a hard place either way.

We've a foot of snow in the garden and realistically, I think we're closed for the rest of the week!

 

I wish HT had bitten the bullet last night; we only had 8 inches down then, but it was pretty obvious we would be closed! I could have stayed cuddled up in bed then!

car wouldn't start - flat battery!

Have fun buying a replacement. My went "Clonk" on Monday, but did manage to start. Halfrauds didn't have any small size batteries, nor did Kwik Fit or ATS. Got one from the web for marginally more than 1/2 the price Halfrauds would have charged.

 

We've had 6" delivered overnight, school will be open, but I'm not trying until 10 at the earliest.

Snow in Slough today, roads aren't too bad unless you go down the back roads. Lots of phone calls coming to me asking if the school is open from parents because reception can't cope with the influx of calls!

I've had a few mornings where the dash has done a good xmas tree impression and the starter has really struggled..but when I start it in the morning I leave it ticking over for a few minutes to defrost, and when I get home I leave it ticking over with no electrical load while I cover it back up. Add in some second gear lock driving and it's holding up fine..so far. I have no idea how old the battery is - the PO noted everything in the manual, every brake re-line, every service, every tyre replacement etc...no mention of a battery. So I could be running on a 9/10 year old DieHard..eek.

 

It'll go on a charger at mums when it stops snowing and get a good topping off there.

Still not had any snow here. Everywhere else in the country seems to have had some except here.
