Both my techies are off doing the usual printer maintainence, password resets and all the other stuff I can't be bothered to. Nothing much is planned due to budgets all being closed shortly. Is it unhealthy to spend 43 hours a day playing Solitare? Alternitively my white car is now brown. Could give that a wash, but need to come up with a work related reason for doing so - anyone? Tom

AshF Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 If I'm sat down I usually look like I'm bored, but it usually means i'm doing 300 different things at once on one of the three machines on/around my desk (Wintel box, G5, Powerbook G4 12"). There seems to be a common misconception that if you're sat down you're not doing anything. The G4 is my sanity device, being my main link to the outside world and the object that goes most everywhere with me... I will miss it when I move on and leave it behind... Having said that given the past 3 years of existence it has had, they may just let me keep it... Yeah, right.

I know that one, people seem to think that i'm not doing anything atm, when in fact I am using TS to control another machine which i'm creating a full sysprep on (with all our software etc) and making sure it fully works

How many times have you spent a day or more working on something that makes very little or no difference to the end user. From an administration point of view it might be brilliant but as far as your users are concerned you've been doing nothing. I hate that one. Oh well. Tom
AshF Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Atm, I have Edugeek up on the powerbook, and my IM's, and am talking with a former tech from the college about some work he did here and picking his brains. I'm also sat in a macintosh support channel just monitoring the ebb and flow of general conversation without partaking.On the G5 I'm running iTunes and Server Monitor. On the PC I'm running 3 TS instances into different servers, Outlook, a 12 month game plan that I've been writing, and also researching some Ranger/Profile problems we've been having. And then someone just sticks their head round the door and asks 'are you busy?'
john Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 I get that as well, they see you sat at your desk and think hmm they ain't that busy, no im just writing sysprep, or remote assisting someone on a PC, reading a PDF to save paper etc I know what you mean exactly.

Most days I go to work with a list of jobs that I have written up the night before and those are the days that everything seems to go wrong and I have teachers/pupils knocking on my office door all day. On the odd day that I don't have a precompiled list of jobs, everyone leaves me alone and everything works as it should.

I spent yesterday re-imaging five systems and doing the things in-between that needed looking at, and then spent two hours waiting for WSUS to update the machines- meanwhile reading up before an important meeting tomorrow...and you get that *look* from teachers that says, "mmm...these techies have a really easy life..lazy B$%t&rd3" It's annoying. But then if you have to live your life in approximately one hour spoon fed discrete chunks each day with bells and corridors in-between I can see how they would think that ;-)
