tb2571989 Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 In working in a few schools I've found a range of ages in IT Support. I'm currently 20 in my third school, first stared 19 on a year's apprenticeship, then 6 months at a private school and now a few months at my current place. Apprenticeship it was me and 29 year old guy, the private school was me, 25 IT Technician and 34 Network Manager and current is me, and two guys in their 50's. I've seen plenty of female IT Teachers but it seems the female IT Technicain is very rare indeed.

zippo Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 First job was technical support at RML back in the days when they were behind Tesco's down the Coley Rd in Oxford. It was all 380Z's and I started before 5.25 or 8" floppies were available. Everything loaded from cassette tape in those days. I had two telephones - if the red one rang I had to answer it quick because it was likely to be from ILEA! Never been employed by a school as such - but have remained in the educational IT game for the last 26 years - which probably beats most of you. Oh - 52 YOA and always on the technical side.

Then I repped for several of the early US semiconductor companies (Mostek, Synertek, Analogue Devices and Western Digital) I worked with RM on a few development projects and also Acorn, Apricot, Sinclair, ICL to name a few. I went on to work for Western Digital for 10 years or so and came to work in school as a wind-down, ten years ago. We then had 15 PCs, 15 Acorns and a quiet life and just me supporting it. The only thing that hasn't changed is that it's still just me! I'm 60.

Oh ok then, just me. Played computer games as a kid,played games with my friends as a lad,played FAR too many games as a young man,and now I play games with the good lady chewing my ear for it. 28....and getting twitchy about 30 Joe

Started out when programs were done on punched tape and a big card reader but never thought I'd end up doing it as a job or for that matter going to Uni at 40 and getting a teaching degree! Didn't like school, could not wait to get out and now for my penance work in a school doing ICT support and teaching. Must be something I should read in to that!
