I've got a G1 which I love to bits with T-Mobile and think the Android platform is the best thing since sliced bread. My contract is up this month and I was looking at getting the HTC Desire as the obvious successor.

 

However, what has upset the applecart is my buying my daughter an iPhone 3GS. In the space of a week I've gone from being a rabid iPhone hater to someone who is totally hooked on how brilliant the whole thing is.

 

I now can't make my mind up whether to stay with Android (which appeals to my inner-geek) or go for Apple and become a fawning fanboy.

 

Help me make my mind up!

Agree entirely. It annoys the hell out of me. Despite this I have a HTC Desire and do absolutely love it, and more than the iPhone I must admit. The new iPhone 4 looks quite tempting though...

The iPhone isnt hot. Some apps dont work with the proxy details you put in.

for me, I had a go of an android and imo the iPhone is far suprerior. Im waiting to see if I can upgrade my contract early for the iPhone 4, If I can then I will be selling my iPhone 3G for about £60.

Go Android - there is an app to allow the use of a proxy which seems to work reasonably well, but I hardly use it anyway. Android also gives a little more freedom in what you can do with it ie you are not tied to whatever Apple approve of.

 

Stay free of Big Brother, go Android :D

Snap, HTC Desire but no proxies with Wi-Fi, means my boss can continue to sneer at me over his Jobsian mind control device, I sneer back about flash and lack of openness. The proxy settings omission seems quite a large oversight though.

My techie instinct says go for the Android, but I have had secret suppressed yearnings for an iPhone ever since I bought an iPod Touch. :)

 

I am going to wait a while longer & let the early adopters debug the iPhone 4 & then decide. The problem with Android & proxies may eventually sway my choice anyway.

Thats your choice on an app level.

 

Apples new T&C (that you must agree to use iTunes) requires location awareness that they state they sell to partners. Your privacy is very important to Apple(s) business model.

Go with the Desire, I've had mine a couple of months now and absolutely love it. At the end of the day though - you're really deciding whether to sell your soul to google or apple.

@alan-d: which app? I haven't been able to find one that works on my Desire

I was going to get the Desire but Vodafone told me they didn't have any stock. They offered me the Legend instead and I must say I'm very very impressed with it. They also knocked another £5 off my line rental every month for the trouble too. :-D

You can turn it off again.

Apple tweaks privacy policy to juice location tracking ? The Register

 

But thats only for apps and downloads. It still sends location data to Apple and its partners.

 

Apple have forced you to agree to new T&C for using the store.

 

 

Every android app warns you.

You can opt of of google location services and you are not opted in by default.

You can still use google maps without agree to share all info.

Definitely go for the Desire. I have had mine for a few months now, upgraded from the G1, and what an improvement! Market seems to be getting much better and many more quality apps.

 

As for the location permission on apps, it is required for any ads, that is a bit of a pain.

I'm getting a Galaxy S. Massive screen with awesome performance. It has loads of cool stuff too, like Allshare which is a DLNA app to stream to and from compatible devices, as well as acting as a bridge. Codec support includes DivX and h.264.

Look at o2 recycle O2 | Recycle | Sell your phone online for up to £200 with O2. then the early upgrade offer O2 | iPhone 4 Early Upgrade Offer | Upgrade early to iPhone 4 for existing O2 customers i can trade in my 8gb 3g a year early and only have to pay £50 :D
