I have had this working successfully, as long as the image isn't too hardware dependant. We imaged a Dell Optiplex 620 which had a 80Gb hard drive - imaged with Multiple Partitions, Fixed Disc Size option and the OS was Windows 7. Created a virtual machine with a fixed 80Gb Virtual Hard Drive and it happily went away and installed it, no issue at all. The time it fails is if the base hardware the image is coming from is too different or if you are using the "Resize partition" option - sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.

We use GPO settings to distribute this information. Have a look under: Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Wireless Network (IEEE 802.11) Policies and you might find what you're looking for. You can create a new wireless policy including the ability to use Single Sign On, works significantly better with Vista/Win 7 than XP though.

This is the way we would like to go, it's going to be a big cultural shift for people but I think it's worth the effort.

Should have mentioned we do block exe's on USB drives and autorun.inf as well for all.

We advise students and staff to change the volume label of the USB drive to their username... seems to work reasonably well.

No, just add in the reservations but don't use them until the active lease expires on the DHCP. Once the active lease expires the DHCP server will issue them with another IP address and you can start using your reservations.

I think last time we had this issue all we had to do was create a new client32.ini with a new security key and then use NetSupport Deploy to push the new client ini file out - it automatically restarted the client and away we went.

This is probably good advice, we had a similar problem once, it got better with details view instead of thumbnails etc. When windows was creating the extended attributes (such as thumbnails) it was crashing explorer whilst trying to retrieve them. This happened particularly with media files such as AVI's which were encoded with, in those days, unusual video codecs such ax XVID. Once we updated the codecs on the machine the issue went away. Since then I've find that 90% of explorer crashes when browsing folders tend to be related to it attempting to do something fancy with extended attributes.

Out of interest why no Forefront TMG which is the direct replacement for ISA 2006? You have Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010 etc....

If you give yourself full access permission on an Exchange account you can open their account in OWA and see everything without having to reset a password. If you use https:///owa/ it will normally open their entire mailbox in the browser window. As for the AUP, yes does depend on that - as long as the Headmaster has agreed the AUP in place that is your written authority. I would still have someone else present when opening another persons email account. Depending on the nature of what you're looking for it's your call as to whether that's Senior Leadership or just another staff member.

Extremely solid advice.

Domain Users here - Windows 7 desktop - remote software installs using SCCM 2007, asset management using Netsupport DNA, remote support using Netsupport Manager. I think the key to making it work is to make sure that your supporting infrastructure is good enough to handle requests for software/configs etc etc. Although we do not allow any untested software straight onto our network we have a test network and test machines for that purpose.

Best thing I ever did when I rebuilt our computers/servers/network was to take away local admin rights. Other than IT Support staff there are only three other staff that have local admin rights - and that's only for their own machine and because they have proven themselves trustworthy!

Why don't you try here: HP PartSurfer Put in the Serial No of your machine or the product no, select your machine from the search results and it will give you a list of all parts available for that server type - it's normally fairly comprehensive. Once you have the part no any HP Supplier should be able to get it for you - if you have a half-decent supplier they can probably find the product number of the part for you anyway.

We don't generally have a problem - every teacher is issued with a laptop and connects to the whiteboard in whatever class they are in. None of the teachers have admin rights so they can't install anything so no issues there. We keep 3 spare "teacher" laptops that can be used by supply teachers and we have 5 cover supervisors who also have a laptop each. I can't remember the last time I got a call about a problem involving this to be honest.

No, it doesn't. Settings work from furthest to nearest, and the account settings will take precedence as it is nearest the user. Hope that makes sense.... For example -> If you had a user in an OU heirarchy such as below it would be applied in this order: Domain Default Policy ---> Staff Settings Policy ----> IT Staff Settings Policy ---> AD Account Settings The AD settings for the inividual user will override group policy. I take it the server doesn't have any form of internet access available to it then? The looks like it's trying to perform a security certificate update and is unable to do so.
