IME most people of that opinion are still blinkered by Maggie. Even living where i live im yet to meet anyone who can express a reasonable arguement against the tories, only falling back on the same worn out record of the miners and the railway.

Just out of interest, How old are the participants of this thread? I'm guessing some, if not most, are under 30?

 

I will write a separate thread which will detail exactly why the Tory Party are the curse of the last 30 years. Labour may not have been perfect, but the system that they were left with was one that was destroyed in the 80's by Maggie and her cronies.

 

It's not ALL about the miners and the railways. It's about British Gas, British Telecom, British Airways, the Water Board etc etc etc.

No tax increase on the essentials, beer, fags and petrol lol!

 

Not quite true, no direct tax increase on them but VAT increase thus they will all go up in January 2011 with the VAT increase

Indeed, don't forget to mention the deregulation of banks under Maggie & Ronnie. The very reason for them going out of control to start with....

Labour had 13 years to correct that, did they even try? For me that arguement doesnt carry any weight whatsoever. Fair enough if labour had put it "right", just not in time, or had even tried to do it, but they didnt.

Of course, the next blow will be that on top of the pay freeze, we'll get little or no increase in line with inflation either, yet another way they can rip us all off. It's ok though, because they dangled the increased tax-free personal allowance carrot, you know, the one that barely puts a dent in the VAT increase, frozen wages and (I'm guessing) the fact we won't get any rise for inflation.

Erm. The pay freeze is on the inflation related increases - ie. there won't be any. I doubt it'd affect people changing grades, as that is tied to their contracts FWIK.

I took it to mean that the pay freeze was to stop people progressing through spinal points, is it not?

I'd admit to my views being blinkered by my personal experiences and the opinions I've formed by them. How about you? Are you really up for a honest debate on the subject - or are you blinkered by an anti-Labour view?

 

Whoe said - 'we get the governments we deserve'? - they were right! After voting Labour in for a fourth term despite the by then obvious cracks in thier finances, and then the shambles of the last general election I think we've pretty much got what we deserve.

 

I'm still of the opinion that the last election was a missed opportunity. I real progrssive vote for Lib Dems may have got us something more palitable now. Instead we have the LD's propping up a traditional tory party under the promise of a referenderum on AV.

 

And when that goes sower? Well be back at the polls voting in yet another failed tory or labour governement and the crud of the last 30 years is just going to keep on, business as usual.

 

Torys come in and f' the poor. Labour come in to borrow and spend. Then back to the Torys and more f'in the poor. And back to Labour to borrow and spend. And around it will keep going.

 

Surely one day we're going to want to look at a different point of view?

While everyone has been discussing VAT, wage freezes etc.....

 

Did anybody spot "He said his Budget implied further £17bn cuts in departmental spending by 2014/15, unprotected departments face an average real cut of around 25% over four years. "

 

So there is more bad news to come, when they decide where this axe falls.....

That's the main problem isn't it. Public sector* pay freeze

 

*Note : does not apply equally to all public sector workers! (edit: I suspect)

Ive tried to have debates before but they usually end up in a extreamly educated response of "you arnt old enough to know what went on [with the tories]..." but with no facts on the subject. The constituancy i live in has never really been Labour, but all around me have been. My parents are labour, my friends parents are labour... So i can assure you that my opinions are my own , born from, be it fairly limited, knowledge and experiance. I have never voted labour as even back when they were "cool" i could see right through their half assed plans and unsustainable markets.

If you can enlighten me as to what the tories did wrong then that will be more knowledge and maybe by opinion will change.

Public sector pay freeze over £21k - check

VAT increase - check

Inflation at about 2%? - check

 

= real terms pay cuts - check

 

Becta sacked - check

25% off education spending over 4 years - check

 

Might be time to start thinking about leaving education? Question is can is the endless targets and deadlines of private sector work going to be any better/worth it compared to the misery coming our way over the next few years?

25% budget cut? If that hits here, we're going to be in serious trouble. We're already having a round of redundancies so as to not go into deficit.
