Is EduGeek more responsive?

Since we have upgraded our servers are you finding us more or less responsive during peak times? Please let us know before I have to dig into my pockets again

I found the site frustratingly slow still today at work, early to mid afternoon

 

Was OK at other times though I think

 

I will take notice tomorrow again of speed

It's generally much better but it has timed out several times over the last couple of afternoons! I'd say that this was poor since we now have a load-balanced package.

Weare load balanced over 2 servers, but I think we are on a 512k link on each. I may have to get us a 1meg connection after Christmas.

I've not noticed a great deal of difference over the last couple of days.

 

Some of the problem may be the CMS itself - while I was looking at other sites I noticed that the Dragonfly sites seem to take longer to load especially if busy like this one.

 

May be worth waiting till you get the new site up before upgrading to see if that makes any difference.

Very slow for me yesterday during the afternoon and did time out twice, although at home last night the site was as good as any other site. This morning for me its slow again.

When we got o the new site we be moving to dedicated hosting so wont be an issues anyway..

 

This was interm measure to solve problems for now...

Just to add... there's currently 13 users on the site (including visitors that may be bots) and it is running painfully slow

 

I'm wondering if it might be database access slowing it down... perhaps they've sat their database server on a 33.6kbps modem?

Just a thought but knowing a little about phpBB2 and my own coding I can't help but think that you're making life difficult for yourself with the high levels of database calls that just a single page has at the moment.

 

I'd highly recommend having all the extraneous stuff like

- EduGeek Calendar

- Latest News

- Who is where

- even the "Bett 2007 fund"

- EduGeek.net Members Who Blog

 

.. only shown on the home page and culled from the forum areas which I suspect is where 95% of your visitors spend their time.

 

Two benefits to this..

1. You cut down on the additional db calls they entail

2. You declutter the screen, especially when you're trying to read the forum posts.. Speaking frankly I don't look at it and it just wastes desktop space IMHO.

 

At a guess you'd improve the load on the server by about 50% at bare minimum..

 

 

But to answer the original question, it does seem to be running better but still suffers occassional lock ups or non-responsiveness from time to time.

Fair comment.. I'm just saying that perhaps it's not necessary to have it on every page... Usually this sort of thing appears on a portal page where you can just dip in and out once in a blue moon to check everything.

 

T'is obviously just my personal opinion but from the standpoint of making the site more efficient it also has some merit.

It won't hurt to try it for a few days to see if it improves things.

the clutter as people say the Problem here is is we cant have it one page and not another not with out some major recoding with current cms we have anyway as we are moving away from this cms.

 

I do understand but remember site more than just forums people use 'the clutter' a lot in management speak it is .. it provides added value

 

But on serious note the load balancing was quick fix to speed up some of the issues.

 

As said this will all be solved once we move to dedicated hosting and move away from current cms so please do bare with us ..

 

Over weekend will have look at stuff to see what can in meantime..

Just as a note though loads seem to be spiking again as I spent a lot of time trying to post just once this morning... took me 10 minutes before I got through without a timeout.

e107 is good for this Set up different classes such as guest, member, admin so only the essential stuff appears for guests, all less admin for members and everything for admin. (Just an example )
