Just out of interest, how do you name your network ports in rooms

Just out of interest, how do you name your network ports in rooms from your patch panels?

 

On the patch panels do you use the format:

Room 1 - port 1, 2, 3 and so on

Room 2 - port 1, 2, 3 and so on

or

do you use 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 etc. The only problem with doing this way is that if a room wants another network point and you already have port 3 and 4 in there, you could end up with port 35 or if there are 2 network cabinets near by you could end up witn a bit of confusion.

 

So how do you organise it?

being orignally setup by and idiot we are numbered 1 to 179, then the new built rooms room number then 1 onwards

Ours are labeled as follows

 

"Comms Cabinent""Patch in that cab""No"

 

EG - 02B15 would be cabinet 2 patch B (second down) port 15

 

Cabs are no sequentially, pathes are lettered top to bottom in each cab and then 1-24 for each patch.

Due to these being several small schools we have them labelled (when they are labelled!) simple with numbers. Though the most useful ones have been similair to james with having patch panel A,B etc and the port number. Labelled similairly in the cabinets (There are so few cabinets that it is obvious which one is which!).

Mostly room name & then 1 upwards, so G54-1, G54-2 etc. We do have some stupidly named ones as well as a hangover but we will be re-doing them at some point.

Historically we have a mixture of just numbers, numbers with the room number of the associated patch cabinet, and some which extend that to include the patch within that patch cabinet.

 

My preferred option and the one we plan to implement in our new build will certainly be "location of patch cabinet""patch panel""port number" as described above

Interesting thread and most useful as I've been looking to rename ours which are currently numbers, and I'm not entirely sure the numbers match up, especially with there being several different switches dotted through the school (Summer Holiday Project 2010 - Move Server Rack and Servers to a room on their own, not in a classroom, and check the wiring - should be fun!)

Mine are numbered 1-whatever based on the cabinet for that area and then documented in our shared area, which then says which cabinet feeds that area. Eventually we will be labelling the cabinets A - M and then eventually re-label all the ports A/pan/port but thats a LONG way off really

Yes our network cabling really is that shoddy. For a number of rooms I have no idea which cab the cables run to, and it isn't helped by the fact that when their is numbering of ports it doesn't match up to patch panel numbers (in any cab!). Hopefully replacing all cabling this summer (you might have guessed from the numbering that it's been installed shoddily) so we'll be looking to have everything labelled Cab/Patch Panel/Port Number i.e. A/01/12

Mine are done by patch panel so we started A and now go up to V so ports in rooms labled A1 A2 and if we have to add another it may well be G1 but as long as its labled it doesnt matter . we have a comprehensive database of all ports/pannels and switch ports they go to makes life so much easier.

It has taken me years to do them all though.

Interesting to see how people label their network points.

 

I like the idea of giving each cabinet a Letter, think i might start doing this.

Data points in the room will be:

[letter of network cabinet]/[number of port in room]

Points in the network cabinet will be:

[room number]/[number of port in that particular room]

Each cab has a letter and ports are numbered A/001 for example. Couldnt really be bothered to put which patch panel they were on since it doesnt reallu take very long to look

Still have yet to do this in a lot of the school mind. Relabelling probably close to a thousand points takes a while..

We have it labelled this way as well allthough when they are installing lots of ports the installers have gone from 1 to 48 say on 2 x 24 port patch panels. So we have K-36 instead of K-2-12
