Dos_Box Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I've just been though the analytics for the Windows platforms being used to view the site on and this is the result: Windows XP – 350,798 Windows 7 – 227,103 Windows Vista – 77,071 Server 2003(!) – 23,997 Windows 2000 (!!) – 1532 Windows 98 – 84 Windows NT – 28 Windows CE – 12 Windows ME (!!!!!!!!!)- 6 Who is it still using ME? My guess it's Simon using the 98 based platforms though
GrumbleDook Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 erm ... only occasionally and it is just a VM ... but that can't just be me.
buzzard Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I'm surprise ME still works, I wonder what AV works with it!
Gatt Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 More to the point - WHY! is anyone using ME to begin with!! Also, where are the stats for Server 2008/R2?
localzuk Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I use Windows 2008 Server, so interesting that it doesn't appear. Must bundle in with Vista? I think 2k8 R2 appears as Win 7 too.
Hightower Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I find it's more worrying people are browsing the internet with their servers?! I hope these aren't mission critical servers and are just test VM's or something?!
GrumbleDook Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 ME does still sort of work ... I only have it as a few games I have are not happy on anything higher than ME ... and actually work better on ME than they do on 98SE. I also use it for the odd test of sites when using Netscape 4 or IE 5.
localzuk Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I find it's more worrying people are browsing the internet with their servers?! I hope these aren't mission critical servers and are just test VM's or something?! Some of us run server OS's as our desktop machines. For example, it isn't easy to develop sharepoint webparts without having visual studio installed on a windows server box with sharepoint installed. So Server OS != Server computer...
K.C.Leblanc Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 What's the time frame, I'm sure I've visited more then 77,000 times.
Dos_Box Posted May 5, 2010 Author Posted May 5, 2010 I'm surprise ME still works, I wonder what AV works with it! Why? It never stayed running long enough to pick up anything! 1
Dos_Box Posted May 5, 2010 Author Posted May 5, 2010 What's the time frame, I'm sure I've visited more then 77,000 times. This is the past month.

That's what I meant - it would be worrying if people were browsing from their DC's and other member servers that could be classed as critical.
tmcd35 Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 If anyone has continuously used Win ME as their main OS for the past 11 years without ever re-installing it and has managed a continuous uptime of more than 30 minutes then I'd say that they should be proud and using it should be a badge of honor. For me I never got past 15 minutes without a BSOD and a reboot and I had to do a total system rebuild every month. Didn't take me long to revert back to Win'98SE and praise the $diety when XP was released. So there you have it. If you're one of the 6 ME users stand up, be proud and be counted. You've achieved what very few others have ever done. We applaud you superior technical know how and marvel at how you manged to convince ME and IE not to BSOD at the first sign of Javascript!
tech_guy Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I use ME on a box at home but it isn't connected to the internet. It's used for running a bespoke video conversion program that only runs well on ME.
dhicks Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I find it's more worrying people are browsing the internet with their servers?! Most likely people with Terminal Services systems. -- David Hicks
OutToLunch Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 Funny you should ask that - I'm not, but we still had a 95 box floating around till a month or two ago. Needed for horrendous old win 3.11/95 science programs. I found a box of retail copies of Win ME yesterday while clearing out and they're still sat there while I work out who to inflict them on...

It would be quite an achievement. I remember eagerly "upgrading" from 98 and thinking it looked so cool...for about 10 minutes. The amount of times and different computers on which I though 'oh ill give it another go' then to revert back to 98 the same day was staggering. Although I wouldnt ever want to use them regularly now, at least 95 & 98 are still usuable (and 2000 of course) Edited May 5, 2010 by sidewinder
3s-gtech Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 2000 is still pretty sound, very stable and pretty quick when set up right. DirectX 9.0c too, just like XP! I only migrated our last couple of 2000 machines a few months back.
GrumbleDook Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 98se was quite stable eventually. Yes ... I used to tell people that 98SE was so called because the coders secretly called it 'stable ... eventually!' Amazing the number that believed that.

tmcd35 Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 So no Mac or Linux fanboys visit the site then ;-) We are about if you know where to look for us
powdarrmonkey Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 So no Mac or Linux fanboys visit the site then ;-) Clearly not, since I am they, but... I've just been though the analytics for the Windows platforms being used to view the site on and this is the result: ...my emphasis.
