tom_newton Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 BBC News - Why we cannot fly through a cloud of volcanic ash This here volcano is supposed to be scattering ash all over the show. Skies in Yorkshire presently a dull grey, but this is "situation normal". Anyone seen hide nor hair yet?
teddybear Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Not that you can see the ash, but www.flightradar24.com is a good site to watch just now :-) 1
6Foot2 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 (edited) Nothing here [Hertfordshire] Skies are quite bright and sunny [so much so I have to close the blinds to be able to see my screens!] Edited April 15, 2010 by 6Foot2 Add ] 1
SteveBentley Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Apparently it's too high to see, but there could be a spectacular sunset tonight. 1
elsiegee40 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 (edited) From the BBC News special I've just seen... and they really were struggling to fill the time... the ash is very high and unless the weather changes it won't be visible yet. It really was a waste of a programme: reporters at airports reporting that there were no planes; an asthma expert saying it wasn't a problem at the moment, but if the ash did come down that asthmatics needed to make sure they had their inhalers and spokesmen for various parts of the airline industry saying we're doing it for safety and they don't know when the situation will change. Ooh I forgot the vulcanologists saying that they can't say how long the eruption will last. Still it's a change from the general election! EDIT Best bit: teenager who was supposed to be flying to Florida was asked what he'd been doing to pass the waiting time... "Well first I had a bacon butty..." Edited April 15, 2010 by elsiegee40 1
ZeroHour Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I am in Aberdeen so I would have thought I would have seen it but nothing really obvious here. Going to phone family in Shetland and ask if they see anything. 1
tom_newton Posted April 15, 2010 Author Posted April 15, 2010 Too high to see? Boring! Want ash falling from the sky making folks' washing dirty and so forth. If we are going to be inconvenienced and unable to fly to see our colleagues in soton, we want something to look at at least!
timbo343 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 if the ash does fall, it will be a bit like silent hill...
Dos_Box Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I'm looking forwards to some very nice sunsets over the next few days. thankfully, Blackpool shoreline is 20 mins from my house and always makes for a breathtaking show when a good sunset is in the offing
CHR1S Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Ooh I forgot the vulcanologists saying that they can't say how long the eruption will last. I just spoke to one myself... he said it would be long and prosperous! (obscure?) 2

BatchFile Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 ASH IS FALLING IN SOUTH CUMBRIA!!!!! oh Hang On False alarm, it's blossom blowing off the trees:o
witch Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 The car definitely had a layer of fine grit on the windscreen first thing this morning - don't know if that was ash? It didnt happen on any other day
elsiegee40 Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Our cars are covered in grit today too. I assume this is volcano fallout.
glennda Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Anybody missing holidays over this? I was ment to be flying out yesterday for a 10 day holiday - was moved to tomorrow but now looks like that will be cancelled aswell. Also does anybody know what staff they will be missing for monday? currently i know my old school will be without a science teacher, 2 english teachers and an IT teacher as they are all stuck abroad! the science teacher has not been given a flight home until the 3rd May but is on standby until then!
witch Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Hadnt thought of that - we have one teacher in Oz, one in Tibet to my knowledge

Andrew_C Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 If we are going to be inconvenienced and unable to fly to see our colleagues in soton, we want something to look at at least! If it helps, it is nice and sunny this morning! Thad said, and I may be convincing myself of this, the sky does look a little yellowish and hazy. Certainly not raining ash and pumice yet though.
gaz350 Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Also does anybody know what staff they will be missing for monday? 1 of our VP's and the 1 of Team Leaders went to vietnam, and were due to fly back on friday so i guess they are still stuck there and could be for another week by the sounds of it.
Guest theeldergeek Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 1 of our VP's and the 1 of Team Leaders went to vietnam, and were due to fly back on friday so i guess they are still stuck there and could be for another week by the sounds of it. My parents were due to fly back to Cyprus on Sunday morning - that's been cancelled. No visible signs of any ash falling to ground here, sunny, warm, clear blue skies, distinct lack of bird song though...
localzuk Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 We've got at least one teacher stranded in Brunei due to the ash. The weather has been gorgeous for a few days now, although slightly hazy. Amazing isn't it how one event, a thousand miles away can cause our entire country trouble, and a lot of the rest of Europe too. The knock on effects, if it lasts much longer, could be pretty bad though, as lots of goods are shipped by air-freight, such as medication.
Guest theeldergeek Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Our cars are covered in grit today too. I assume this is volcano fallout. I read somewhere that the Home Counties had report of ash on the ground. Nothing here in East Sussex. Other reports I've read suggest the ash has been detected at a much lower level in the sky, as low as 4000ft in some areas.

We were just discussing the knock on effect of this on not just the airlines, but industries that serve them - in-flight meals and taxis for example. And what about the shops and catering at airports? No passengers means no customers. The awful thing is, this eruption could go on for months. Apparently the same volcano erupted for almost a year back in the 1800's!
