Hmm, unless they are also going to remove HT's employment rights, I think you'll find you can't simply sack them because you don't like them, they have to be failing to do their job - and there's already mechanisms in place for that. Whether they're implemented competently or not . . . . that's the issue.

Bless them :) One teacher claims they're "in the real world."

i think this particular comment could constitute 'in the real world'...

A massive paycut at a time the government would be looking at our tax bracket to repair the recession?

....if i knew what the bit highlighted actually meant. What d'ya reckon ?

I quite like the firing the head one, so long as they allow support staff to do it as well, and its got to be via a secret voting system, I can think of a few people who would enjoy that style of system :)

Is that the world in which they can actually wipe their own bums ?

Sounds to me like someone isn't happy with their current head teacher ;)

I have had problems in the past with Headteachers: I had to leave a previous job because I felt that a Head at one of the schools at one of the schools I was supporting at the time was doing such an awful job [other factors came into play too but that was a major contributor]

I like this quote from the thread about what supply teachers hate:

The password is written on the laptop

This reply was from a teacher trying to shoot the OP down - but all it does is show how incompetent they are! :D

What's the point? It's the same here.

So, it isn't just IT Technicians and Network Managers that the teachers on that site dislike then... Its each other, heads and supply teachers.

What a lovely friendly atmosphere.

And they don't like criticsm! Mind you. we've seen that with teachers on this site. :)

I haven't seen anything about this in the news.

Can this be real Tory policy?

If it is what about Support Staff having a say too?

How would it work?

It's typical TES garbage. This proposed policy is only applicable to co-operative schools, which don't even exist yet. You wouldn't know it from the article though.

Hooray we are back to teacher bashing. The one topic that really makes us look professional.

Note the irony in my voice.

Bless them :) One teacher claims they're "in the real world."

This kind of comment really riles me.

Until recently my partner was a class teacher and worked bloody hard at it. By the end she was working 15 hour days to stay on top of all the various crap she was expected to do (mostly pointless paper pushing) on top of actually teaching the kids something.

Does anybody here making moronic comments about teachers really understand the kind of pressure teachers work under? Lets compare how many IT support staff leave their job due to stress against teachers. By comparison our jobs are a walk in the park and if anyone is not living in the real world it us

@sparkeh I had no intention of insulting you or your partner - sorry if that is the case.

I was merely commenting how ironic it is that one poster said they're in the real world - yet there they are picking eachother apart!

I know not all teachers are the same.

But I disagree that our job on the whole is a walk in the park - some of us have incredibly huge responsibilities for the whole establishment + more, not just 30 kids at a time.

Your partner may have been one of the good guys - the ones who take all the s*** and say nothing, and just get on with their job. On the other hand though, not all teachers are like your partner.

You get your good ones and your bad ones, like you do techs and other trades. If everyone pulled their weight equally there would probably be no need for your partner to do all those extra hours (I say probably because I don't know the story in full or in part).

Yes, it is a difficult job, but so is ours. Different teachers work in different ways. Not to be harsh or anything to your partner, but 15 hour days is NOT normal. My dad has been a teacher for 30 years, is a department head also (managing half a dozen people). He does a good job, with ever increasing GCSE grades, better behaviour levels etc... and he certainly doesn't do 15 hour days.

I am good friends with a good number of the teachers here, and sure there are days when there is a bunch of marking to do, or a pile of reports, but those are not every day.

Not to mention, as is brought up regularly on here and elsewhere - teachers get paid for their work both via relatively good payscales, good CPD, an excellent pension scheme and long 'holidays'.

So, on balance, teachers don't get such a raw deal as you make out.

It isn't teacher bashing as such, it is more a case of people who are in our job being sick of seeing teachers whinge and moan about things they have no real right to moan about.

T'other half is a conscientious good primary teacher.. 12 hours is not unusual (I see it happening, it's real damnit!).. and because they mess around with the curriculum nearly every year, there is not nearly as much mileage in reusing last year's planning as you might expect (assuming you're even teaching the same year).

I agree with Localzuk.

In retrospect of some comments here, teachers have not got a raw deal. The thing I hear often is that the teachers love not having to work through August and get paid for that pleasure, when people like us are in during the "holidays", maintaining the infrastructure so they can teach. It made me laugh 2 years ago when I nearly broke my neck in a martial arts accident, I was out for a month.

I had the staff phoning me whilst I was in hospital expecting me to help them with technical issues, and when I said I am recouperating, I got a mouthful about how I should help them when they phone (admittedly 2 of the 5 members of staff who did that have been sacked since for incompetance).

If teachers are unable to do a paperbased backup of their work, then there is a serious issue. I drum it in almost daily to all staff that they should have a text based version of what they want to do. In every room there is a whiteboard and an IWB. the IWB is a TOOL, not a neccessity to learning (which some staff think it is).

Teachers should not moan when they do not have the right too.

Glad I got that off my chest.

I think good teachers work very hard and have a very stressful job - you can't 'zone out' for 5 mins whilst teaching, like we can.

But they are not badly paid now (and most of the teachers I know agree and wish that the NUT would approach the ridiculous amount of paperwork question, rather than banging on about salaries) and if you average out their hours over a year, it isn't so bad. I know many people in business who regularly work long hours thoughout the whole year.

I have always felt that it is teachers who came straight into it from college, and married another teacher, who have a bit of a problem in the real world. One teacher I know, whilst going on about hours, made it clear that she really believed that people working in industry only worked their given hours, and no more!!

Another teacher I know has taken to starting at 8 and finishing at 5.30 like her husband does and she has said that as long as she sticks to this, with the 10%ppa they get, she can avoid most extra hours. Having said that, she is a senior school subject teacher and I do believe that they can reuse and rejig last years work much more readily than can poor, put-upon primary school teachers.

In fact I have always thought that the teachers who teach the children to sit and learn, as well as read, write and count should be paid MORE than the ones further up the tree.

Teacher bashing is not a good way to go, but it is hard when some of them treat us like dirt and behave in a completely non-common sensical way (!)

Perhaps I am idealistic and its me that doesn't live in the real world but aren't all school staff from the Head to the cleaner all part of a team that is striving for the same thing?

I have never got this 'them and us' stuff, but perhaps thats because I am lucky to work in a school where I am not made to feel like I am of lesser value than the teaching staff.

Having said that though, if someone has an issue with their own establishment then that is very different to saying all teachers behave in a certain way, that is simply not true. The simple fact is that if you don't like teachers why on earth are you working in a school, its full of 'em!

I don't like going to the dentist, I don't like driving my car, I don't like having to go to bed at night, I don't like being beat on the Wii by my kids, I don't like liver, I don't like xmas pudding, I don't like WORK.

God I'm a miserable git however, I do like posting things I find on the internet that make me wet myself.

Don't go

I don't like driving my car

Walk, cycle, bus.

I don't like having to go to bed at night

Stay up all night

I don't like being beat on the Wii by my kids

Man up and practise, that is not acceptable (use the time that you are not going to bed to good effect)

I don't like liver, I don't like xmas pudding

Good they are the devil's food

I don't like WORK.

Yeah got me there. Not much you can do about accept find something you like doing and do it. Or moan about your current job and colleagues incessantly. Choice is yours.
