Robot Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Hello, After recently writing up a lot of my paper based notes, it has become obvious that having 200+ .txt files is not the best way to do it. So my question is this ... How do you keep track of all the stuff in your head? I'm thinking a wiki may be a good option? Any other ideas//suggestions? Thanks.
Chillibear Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 A wiki is quite a good idea, personally I quite often use http://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuwiki it's quite cute and the back end storage is the good old text file - which does keep things nice and simple and makes getting to the data very easy.
pete Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Yup, use a Wiki. But plan out your namespaces beforehand. i.e [[:hardware:servers:virtual:servername]] Rather than [[servername]] 1
maniac Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I PDF everything and I've got it all stored in a folder on a shared drive both me and my Technician have access to. Eventually this is going to transfer to the learning platform, where we're going to form a staff knowledge base as well so staff can get help doing the things they ask about the most. Mike.
tumbleweed Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 tiddlywiki in a dropbox folder. Put in the 'public' area for instant www availability - depending on content, etc. 1

Sylv3r Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 As team at school we share everything via our ICT Support Wiki. For my own notes, helpguides and bits and peices I use evernote - and I love it. Welcome to your notable world | Evernote Corporation Synchs everything to home / work / pda and my mobile phone. 1
GrumbleDook Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Another big fan of evernote here. I also am a heavy user of moleskine notebooks. There is something satisfying about writing some stuff down and having it in a decent notebook that will last. I like to scan them in each night, attach them into evernote with tags relevant to what is on the pages. When I have time I write them up in full with relevant tags too. If I have a brain wave I will also use evernote to take an iSight note (short video) and tag it too ... and come back to it when I need to flesh the ideas out. I also make use of OpenMind, OneNote, Sharepoint (Lists, Document Libraries and wikis) depending on what I need to share with others. And finally ... I talk to myself a lot. Allows me to keep some things ticking over and shuffle stuff to the front of my mind before meetings. 1
russdev Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 My own stuff got to be Evernote it no understatement to say it runs my life. At work with keep tech stuff in a wiki on the learning platform. Russ 1

You should definitly write a book on organising yourself and time managemet, you sound like you've got it sussed - if only I could be half as organised!
GrumbleDook Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Most of the ideas are pinched from others. Russ introduced me to Evernote. Leon Cych got me into video recording ideas. John Davitt has been scanning his notebooks in for a while now. Always open to more ideas.
ranj Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Sharepoints a good way to keep notes but could be overkill for some and its not like its the easiest thing to setup. We use moinmoin based Wiki where we work and its ok but am looking to change it when I get time!
GrumbleDook Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Sharepoints a good way to keep notes but could be overkill for some and its not like its the easiest thing to setup. I have a few different ones to play with so it is quite easy for me. Alternatives would be to make use of stuff like del.icio.us I suppose.
MatthewL Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Our's will be going into our new LanDesk when installed and setup. At the minute information is all over the place, mainly on our shared area.
bio Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 I am thinking of creating my own blog. Dunno for sure if thats the right way to go. bio...
Robot Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 Thanks very much everyone - Am having a look into evernote, and the dropbox-tiddlywiki now.
detjo Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Decided this morning to make more effort to write stuff down, with regard to a wiki type thing. I did start using MyWiki a while ago but it's a bit of a PITA to use when you just want to make a quick note .. so I stopped using it. A quick search on here threw up this thread and hello Evernote! I think it is now my 'Wiki' of choice. Simple to use and sync's too Thanks to everyone for the Evernote suggestions .
Sylv3r Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I posted on the previous page that I used Evernote back in 2010 and still using it now! Perfect.
plexer Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I tend to stick stuff on my blog or just remember the google search terms lol. Ben
Chuckster Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 How about using OneNote from Microsoft that comes bundled with Office? I like that fact that you can sync it across your SkyDrive and access it from pretty much any device with the OneNote app.
jinnantonnixx Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 (edited) Google Docs. Everything I need to remember goes in there. Copy and paste, name it something sensible and that's that. My work stuff is shared with colleagues, so they reap the fruitful bounties of my Googling. The search is second to none, so I can find a relevant document in no time. I don't even bother filing or organising notes, just stick it in the 'work stuff' folder and the search will pull out the relevant hits. Hasn't failed me yet. Hint: keep local copies of 'how to fix the internet' Edited December 4, 2013 by jinnantonnixx
sparkeh Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 Another Evernote user here. So easy to use and love that I can bring it up on phone or tablet while I'm around the school.
edutech4schools Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 A few years back I used Windows help system to create a searchable database with pics etc that would work on all Windows computers without any extra software being installed. Today I use Google Keep for quick note taking and a combination of G docs and G sites to share any info.
