  1. As I mentioned the Apple Airport Extreme I own has timed access control, although a quick google turns up a few notes to bear in mind (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3649455). I found a quick walk though here Use timed access to lock out iDevices from Wi-Fi | Macworld which should give you an idea about the feature. From a bit of searching it appears that the Airport Express also has timed access control features (based on MAC address), but obviously I'd suggest you confirm that with Apple before purchasing. Given the MAC limitations mentioned in the first link it may not be totally suitable for your needs, unless you can do timed access for all as a default (best check with Apple), in which case a simple timer switch on the mains does seem like the easiest and quickest solution to your needs - or perhaps depending on how managed your switches are you could have a script disable the port the WiFi AP is connected to at 1130 and re-enable it again later.

  4. I just wondered if anyone had used the Xeon E3-1220L chip yet? That's the dual core 20W one... I noticed it's available as an option for the Dell R210 II server and wondered what that would get the server's idle power draw down to? I've got previous R210s (first gen) with the 45W E3-1260L chip in down to 40-50W neck of the woods (idle power) with suitable C2/3 states and low power disks etc, but wondered if the E3-1220L would allow me to go lower (whilst keeping a moderately capable server), or if perhaps the idle power consumption of the chip E3-1220L would be about the same as E3-1260L, making there little point to getting the lower power model. Any thoughts?

Actually strictly speaking the article extraction (and image captions) in the 'reloaded' version is a different extraction effort from Andy's work (although much of the reverse engineering effort was similar). The images on 'reloaded' are from his extraction work with the BBC on the 1" tape from which the laserdiscs were mastered. Not that it makes an end difference since it's all the same content!
  6. That's correct, you only need it for the higher dual link resolutions. I use an active Display Port->DVI with my (now old) Apple Cinema display. This adapter is resold by several companies Scan.co.uk: 490-11917 - Dell / Bizlink Active DisplayPort to DVI (Dual Link) Adapter - 1080P Ready - not sure if there are any others on the market, but it works well.

If it is a case of Flash not using your proxy settings - pretty likely - you can check that by using a third party proxy tool like Proxifier - Bypass firewall and proxy, tunnel connections through an HTTPS and SOCKS proxy (free demo) to send all the browser traffic (including Flash) via your chosen proxy. If it works via that then it'll be Flash ignoring the proxy settings, doesn't get you much further forward, but at least narrows down the problem
  8. I've had one for a while now running as an ESXi server and it works quite nicely, certainly fits in the house nicely! CPU isn't what I'd call fast, but its okay for me. I'm generally running non-gui servers FreeBSD/Linux and I don't tend to have more than 3 or 4 running at any one time since it's just a test rig. It's nice having the 4 SATA drive bays and it's pretty quiet.

I've got a Peplink (Peplink - Dual-WAN, Multi-WAN Internet Link Load Balancing Routers) balance box (mid range one) which is hooked up to two ADSL lines (third WAN port empty at present), just used on a bit of an adhoc R&D network that we use in the office. Seems to do the job quite nicely and been happy with it. One thing to consider is potential contention at the exchange (if all your DSL goes to one exchange), so as David mentioned perhaps un-contended lines would be best. Bought our balance from Claritas Solutions a few years back they were very happy to lend us a unit to trial first.

  11. 8 R900s is quite a serious amount of kit, if you can afford to buy the best part of £60k (list) of servers I'd be tempted to pay for some assistance in sorting our your electrical supply. Given electricity costs in data centres I really would speak to whoever will be hosting this lot to discuss the best way of handling it in their facility. Because even a 1U rack would take up the same amount of floor space! It all depends on what you put in your racks, some kit is bulky, but doesn't draw huge amounts of power - if your network patching is rack mounted (as opposed to frame mounted) then you can loose a lot of a rack just down to patch panels. I've always ended up filling racks without a problem! You always find something to put in them. Speak to whoever owns/manages the computer room. Is this a facility you manage or are you colocating your equipment with someone else? Assuming the facility has already been built then chances are the power supplied to each rack will already have been determined. Making assumptions about the cooling is always a big mistake, ultimately no matter what the power feeds to a facility are it will be the cooling capacity that determines the amount of kit that it's sensible to locate in the facility. The only real world figures I've seen for the R900 was a draw of 800W under load, which would seem about right, although that will vary depending on configuration.
  12. Anyone know if it comes with empty caddies for the drives? I know it ships with one drive, but it's not totally clear if there are empty caddies in the other slots or if they are just, well, empty...
  13. That makes more sense, sorry I assumed you meant niche in the sense that what could be achieved with it as a language was limited (based on the sentence about web based needs). Granted it isn't as highly in demand a quick search on one job board gives me 88 ruby jobs vs 237 python ones.
  14. Being a big fan of Ruby I can't see why it would be niche? I do all my coding in Ruby these days, web apps, console scripts, windows GUI apps, games, whatever... maybe I'm just biased, or perhaps Ruby on Rails has just become too well known for Ruby's own good

Just to throw another thought in the works ... although you've asked for a Linux distro, it's always worth looking at the *BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) operating systems. FreeBSD (The FreeBSD Project) being a personal favorite. Ideal server platform, although less "out of the box" than many Linux distros.
