Portable Sound System

Hi, Apologies if there's already a similar thread, i couldn't see it!

 

In our Hall and Gym we've got projectors on trolleys that we wheel in and out as we need for assemblies and whatnot. However we need some new speakers for the laptops to connect to.

 

We had some standard PC speakers sat on the bottom of the trolley in the past (as shown below), however they're a bit weak and dont have the volume we'd like. Also they keep falling off and are now damaged.

 

We've looked about and cant really find anything that'll sit nicely on that bottom shelf. Anyone got any ideas?

Does your hall have a pre-existing sound system that you use during assemblies and such? because it would be wiser most likely just to wire it into that.

Ive not actually used them but when researching a similar situation for someone else i liked the look of this;

Or these. I have these as monitors in the sound booth, but they are quite loud as a cheaper option. 2 for stereo obviously!

Have you any old coombers? Our languages department had some laying around and we get good use out of them connecting them to laptops for classroom/hall use. They tend to give out a good bass sound. Edited October 28, 2009 by pod

If your not bothered about stereo, we use one of these:

You can connect a PC via the RCA sockets and/or a Microphone via XLR/normal jack lead.

Won't fit on the bottom shelf, but might be useful for hall use anyway: starting 2/11 Lidl are doing a PA kit for £99.99:

You could leave the kit set up and run a long cable from the trolley to the amp.

To really understand what you need, we would need to know how big the hall is (huge/small would do) how quiet the kids are and how loud you need the system to run, oh, and budget too!

 

A 100W is not all that good an indication of how loud a system will be; efficiency is an important factor. Of the posts above; I'd look at the Mackie above the Lidl any day, but that is because I'd like it to work beyond the end of the week.

I've got a set of AV40 studio phile M Audio speakers with a 1 year warranty ( if you have any issues call em and they will arrange to get them sent back and replaced ) as I did once and no issues or faffing around

Pretty loud and work great although they do require mains power so not sure if thats an issue

We have exactly the same setup, with exactly the same problem! In fact I had to check your location in case I've got poster from my school:)

 

We had a visit from our neighbouring senior school and they used Logitech Z 4 40 watt speakers which I'm told were quite loud enough, our hall is about the size of a badminton court.

 

Having a bit of a rummage round in a store cupboard I came across a Carlsbro WANDERER PLUS BP Portable PA System so might have try with this to see if it's loud enough.

In a large school hall, we used to use a pair of Edirol MA-7A speakers. They're very solid, can be mounted onto the trolley, and sounded pretty good in such a big space. They'd fit neatly on that shelf too.
