Just phoned the suppliers (well importers anyway) they don't know, are ringing me back when they've found out - "...not had that question before" apparently.

leco Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 I've been pushed back to the installers by the distributors!!! Now the installers are contacting the distributors. Oh and they'd never heard of the WEEE regs. "Oh we haven't been asked that before" grrr starting to get annoyed.

Whilst the disposal may be free, there may be a cost for collection and delivery to their disposal point. Alternatively, can't you ask the local council to collect?

Accepted - just want someone to take the responsibility and dispose of it. Alternatively, can't you ask the local council to collect? I guess this is my next step if I get no joy between distributors and installers (who are now saying that as the board belongs to the school it's nothing to do with them) I'll look at it again tomorrow.

synaesthesia Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Nice and blunt. WEEE. It's been said but it needs reinforcing. It's the law. They (the supplier) are legally obliged to come and collect it, just like Currys are legally obliged to come and get your old fridge should it die on you. Of course they use that as a marketing scam, but not enough people are savvy enough to question it. My old business thrived on this silly misconception. Give them another bell. Suggest you can arrange for it to be couriered to them and you'll invoice them for the costs for your time and shipping. I'd personally have gotten rather annoyed with them by now and have told them that if they don't want to do it, they can come and take out the replacement they've fitted, give you a full refund, take both away and you'll go to a company that isn't intent on breaking the law. Wait until you're in a REALLY bad mood so you've an excuse to shout at them too 1

They make a financial contribution to the DTS which will be used to assist in the development of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collection facilities throughout the UK. If you haven't - please remove it and post it to me (postage and beer money will be refunded ) so I can try it out in one of my iffy ones regards Simon

jimmy_2k Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Hey guys I know this sounds wastefull but at the end of the day, it is the schools responsibility to dispose of all electrical equipment under the WEEE Regulations. I'd just call in a WEEE Disposal contractor or telephone the council and see if they will dispose of it for the school and the school will have to swollow the bill. I know it is all well and good to try and save tax payers money but at the end of the day it costs more in your time chasing these suppliers etc then asking the caretaker to call a skip. This is somthing I have learned working as a technician, once the item is no longer of use, it might be wastefull to throw it away but your time is also money. I have sent working computers to Africa in the past too so I take no joy in working this way.
