Well, it's been out for a week now and there isn't yet a thread for it. So, for those who don't know yet, the latest firmware for the iPhone 3.1.2 has been jailbroken. Geohot has released the tool you need called blackra1n.

It is the easiest jailbreak ever apparently. I say apparently, because it's the first one I've ever done! :p Shut down iTunes, connect up your iPhone, run blackra1n and hit the big button that says "Make it ra1n" and about 30 seconds later your iPhone is jailbroken!

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk6x4yGbflw]YouTube - Easy Way How To Jailbreak NEW 3.1.2 Firmware For All Devices Windows/Mac Blackra1n[/ame]

I've successfully jailbroken mine and loving the results! A few things to note:

Listen to the warnings! If you require an unlock (basically if you are not on O2 in the UK, do not update to 3.1.2. This will change your baseband and you will not be able to use your phone with your non O2 sim! blackra1n also doesn't activate.

Once you have jailbroken, when you run blackra1n, do not install Cydia, Rock and Icy together! I noticed issues with Winterboard and other programs when installing all 3 together. Install each separately. I rebooted after each install.

blackra1n does not add the afc2 service with the jailbreak causing issues with some tools. There is a handy guide here telling you how you can add this to the phone.

Once all that is done, you can finally unleash the true beast of a phone that Apple has so wrongly kept tamed! :)

3.1.2 fixes some of 3.1 bugs like the sleep of death although I am still on 3.0.1 myself. Pity you have to mess to get blackrain going with a fix but otherwise it sounds good.

You only need to mess with the fix if you use iPhoneBrowser or iFunbox. I use neither, but applied the fix anyway. Took near 10 seconds, and I'm an iPhone n00b!

Im on JB 3.1, why should I got to 3.1.2, just a minor security update?

If you're on 3.1, I don't see why you shouldn't update 3.1.2. As far as I'm aware, you need to update to 3.1.2 to be able to run blackra1n. Not tried though, but if you are on 3.1, an unlock obviously doesn't bother you, so, if you are gonna jailbreak, go for it is what I say!

A rather doh question - but why would I want to jailbreak my phone if I am already on O2 and no intention of changing?

What are the benefits?

GJE

Being able to customise the phone in ways that Apple don't allow, or don't want to allow! Custom themes, custom tones, lots more free apps on Cydia, Rock and Icy. I was almost depressed with the iPhone before I jailbroke. Now I love it! :D

You gotta remember, jailbreaking is not unlocking. These are 2 different things. I am on O2 and have no intention of changing. At least for 23 more months! :p - But jailbreak... oh yes!

As "IT professionals" surely you shouldn't be jail breaking your phone so you don't have to pay for the applications (that some individual/company has spent many hours developing)?

Do you use the same approach at work when it comes to software licensing?

I think you misunderstand, we still have to pay for the app store apps but we get additional free 3rd party and homebrew apps for free that do the same or similar jobs. There is no incinuation of piracey here.

Okay - appreciate all the answers given so far.

So I jailbreak and then what - do Apple know? What happens when the next generation of software comes out? Can I still upgrade back to the official version and then apply the newer jailbreak?

What of the free apps? Do they break or get deleted when I update with newer official firmware?

Alll these questions :-0)

And finally - do I need a PC or is there a Mac app?

I jailbraked my iphone to use my 3 sim card, but I'm stuck trying to figure out the 3 settings for cellular data and mms.

I'm on a 3 mobile contract... any helpers would be appreciated.

Call 3 and speak with them and they should be able to tell you those - that or it should be on 3's website

I used blackra1n on my iPod touch yesterday. Worked without any problems.

I've never seen a mac jailbreak app, I have a mac but used blackra1n via a Windows XP VM.

5 icons across, background picture, upto 6 icons on the dock, no big dock overlay on backdrop, text colour and font. app to kill running processes, an app to get rid of the annoying inbuilt ones you dont want on your screen. Password for certain apps. The list goes on...

Also Cydia.... paid for apps that apple dont allow on their store.

blackra1n is also available for Mac. Just click on the big Apple icon - I would link to the file directly, but Geohot asked not to on his blog.

Well it didn't work for me on my 16Gb iPhone 3G - It just puts the iPhone into recovery mode - fires up iTunes and tells me I need to restore my iPhone before I use it.

Hmmmm :-(

I just did it and it worked for me on windows 7 rc after a few goes.

Initially it stuck at the "running" stage and the iPhone has the itunes logo displayed but after applying the following fix blackrain worked.

Windows 7 Possible fix for blackra1n

  • Right click the exe
  • Switch to compatibility tab
  • Run in Vista SP2 mode & Run as Admin
  • Rerun blackra1n and it should work this time (no restore needed if you have done it prior)

Gareth try that and see if it works then.

I ran mine on my Windows 7 RTM laptop just fine. Maybe it doesn't like Windows 7 RC.
