Tempest Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 170:1 and going up, and I'm on 32hrs a week, Term Time only for this lot :x
riedquat Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 381:1 at the moment..with another 21 laptops yet to be ordered. I'm again without a PFY as for some reason they keep abandoning me and going into teacher training :-)
Midget Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 I have >340 machines all on one site and I'm the only person who even knows how to turn them on. No PFYs (and the sort of person you'd get for minimum wage would not be the sort of person I'd want working with me) and the IT Teachers can only use Word. So I have lots of stress. 70 computers in total! Heaven Midget
thom Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 I've got the following 388 PCs and Macs 132 laptops 6 Servers 30 IP Phones 60 Projectors and we are just about to add an new IP CCTV system! It is pretty much all down to me, I have a Tues-Thurs modern apprentice and a part-term lady who manages our independent learning centre (38 PCs) and she deals with all the consumables. I wanted to get 2 full-time technicians but the management said that would be to expensive and they would be more likely to buy into a managed service. I was talking to a networking consultant who made me realise that schools have probably larger networks than most big companies! He has 150 PCs in his company that are managed by a team of 5 technicians.
GrumbleDook Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 The difference is that if a business is without IT for even a few minutes it affects profit whilst in schools it only affects learning ... Damn ... being cynical again.
Midget Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 depends if your teachers are running a side business or not
farmerste Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 i used to be 230 to 1 now i am 110 to 1, but i don't notice the difference as workstations are xp and require more work.
flyinghaggis Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 i used to be 230 to 1 now i am 110 to 1, but i don't notice the difference as workstations are xp and require more work. That's strange. Surely with XP the PCs would be more secure and stable so should require less work. When we had RM2.4 / win98 the PC's crashed all the time and the pupils were able to tinker with all of the settings. XP's proved much more reliable. There's no way we could cope with our current ratio (bout 150:1) if we were running Windows '95/'98 8O
maniac Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 4 of us, 650 computers, 162:1 For 3 months there were just 3 of us, that was pretty stressfull. Mike
openhgs Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 We have : * 13 Linux servers * 120 thin clients * 15 Linux boxes * 2 M$ servers * 50ish XP desktops * 35 XP laptops * 3 dual boot laptops * 15 Apple MACs * 5 Mac ibooks So thats 258 to 1.5. A better question is "What boxes take the most of my time?" It's 6 of the XP desktops and about 15 of the XP laptops. I reckon we spend something like 6 working days of the year on each these 21 machines. This makes the TCO of these very high. We're in a no-win situation; if we lock them down so the users can't fiddle, they complain that they can't install any software, and when it goes wrong, ICT have to clean up th mess. One particular laptop seems to always be with us for reloading - ideally it should be consigned to the graveyard, but there is no money available for a replacement.
localzuk Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 For me it is 173:1. It is starting to get a bit heavy to manage, but we are looking at moving over to thin clients at some point soon for part of the network so the maintenance will drop dramatically. Generally, I would say my workload was high to very high but I'm not complaining too much as that is what I'm here for.
_Bat_ Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Mine isn't bad at all, but my network manager has quite a lot over seven (nine including the two I work for) primary schools. Not including my two schools (I won't include them because I do most of the work for those) he has (these are estimates from when I shadowed him for a month): - 252 Windows Desktops (a large mixture of windows 98, 2000 and XP) - 84 Windows Teacher laptops (all windows XP) - 21 servers (mixture of windows 2000/2003 and linux, mainly windows) - 16 MACs in a wireless laptop trolley - Projector and whiteboard in nearly every classroom of nearly every school He spends half a day at each school and he does all of the above purely by himself. It scares me how busy he is.
animalboy1968 Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 225:1 we have: 456 machines incl teacher laptops, pcs, servers etc 32 iwb soon to be increased by another 25 15 waps that are forever needing our attn (i hate wireless) 80 teachers who need babysitting we are also charged with taking the it forward here. so we are constantly looking at new technologies that would add value to the school. we are in the middle of: installing an isa 2006 server exchange 2003/2007 - i haven't quite decided yet citrix...and all the TCs that go with it trying to get qca to work but that's for another forum i may have forgotten stuff as i sometimes glaze over when i think about the enormity of the task here
Richbrown Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I know this thread is old now but just for the sake of it 780:2 (390:1) + 10 servers !
dirtydog Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 ioooh just seen this, were around 120:1 at the mo.... if only we werent so busy fitting with all the other jobs besides looking after the computers.
maniac Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 In my current school we are about 200:1 at the moment, with more computers coming. We cope very well thou, as generally the technology is very reliable and although we have a lot of computers, we are a relatively small school with only 80 staff and 400 students at the moment.
qcomer Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 We are about 1,000:1 (as far as computers go - then you have to add in printers, projectors, smartboards, document cameras, etc). Then again, we are a US district. Seems like you guys get wayyy better funding than we do. We currently have two IT staff.
jamesfed Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 95:1 here (two full time techs) not to bad to manage now that we are moving to a thin client setup.
alexsanger Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 The technician at my last place is now on his own with roughly 600 desktops (increased since I left - dunno exact numbers), and I know for a fact that they're not recruiting, just investing in more systems and gear to fill his spare time!
dayzd Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Currently we're floating around 400:1. This includes 13 servers and appliances, 23 Macs, an EMC SAN plus 3 or 4 NAS boxes. We were a three man team until a year ago, since when no attempt has been made to hire. :-(
Sombeech Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 409:1 I was thinking 300:1 before I took an actual count
3s-gtech Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) 400:1 here, including servers. Just me Edited January 12, 2011 by 3s-gtech
sparker Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 I am part time with 200 machines so I guess that makes me 400:1 Anyone got any firm recomendations I can take to the governors?
