They will then email you a "deep-link" to access a special enterprise version of their software. Whether they ask you to enter a license code/key or not is up to them It is still necessary for each user to have a Microsoft Account (aka windows live/msn/hotmail) to open deep-links and install themselves. I guess you could add these links as shortcuts to the user's desktop's, via Group Policy Preferences

I am also trying to go virtual with our fax server. I was wondering if this was possible using the free Hyper-V Server R2 that has recently been released? I can use a USB modem or a serial (RS232) modem. Would really appreciate any advice/pointers Cheers

I think I have sorted it now. The software was the "Scalix Connect for Microsoft Outlook.msi" You were correct in saying no switches are necessary. The problem was that the MSI's language was set to German and was therefore failing on a PC set to en-gb Luckily, I spotted an "ignore language" checkbox in the advanced button within the package in Group Policy This then installed the software successfully. Know I just need to get the profile created and the users can use Outlook for their Scalix mail.

This may well be a case of summer holiday brain meltdown but hopefully you will be able to assist. I want to install a program on PCs when the computers boot up. I have a file "setup.msi" that I added to group policy. The setup requires admin privileges to install so I set it to run from the "Computer Settings" section. However, event viewer reports that it fails. I have a feeling that this is because it needs to be told to run in silent mode. If I log in as an admin and run "setup.msi /qn" then it installs perfectly I have read about using Orca/WinInstallLE to repackage or create a transform but it seems a really convoluted way to do it. Am I missing something obvious? If not then what is the best/most reliable way to do it?

I decided to engage my brain power and figure out my own solution This is what you need to do On NT4PDC in OLDDOMAIN open User Manager Create a new user called ntmigrator Add ntmigrator to the Domain Admins group On the DC of target domain (e.g. NEWDC in NEWDOMAIN) open AD Users & Computers Open the Users OU and double click the Administrators group Add OLDDOMAIN\ntmigrator as a member Note - it will not work with the Builtin\domain admins group Click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Domain Controller Security Policy Double click on Local Policies and choose User Rights Assignment Double click on the Allow log on locally policy. Add the user account (OLDDOMAIN\ntmigrator) Reboot NEWDC You can now log on to the new DC as ntmigrator and sucessfully run ADMT (Make sure you select OLDDOMAIN in the logon box:doh:)

I am also getting the error above but the trusts are already external. Apparently it is to do with the Administrator on the new 2003 Target domain does not have permissions on the NT4 target domain. How can I add the 2003 Administrator to the nt4 domain admin groups? Sorry Geoff but I am a bit confused The new Server is currently part of the existing SME domain and hasn't been elveated to DC yet. I want to do it the "right" way so I am keen to follow your instructions. Is this the right order? 1, Update DHCP to v9 2, Add "aac.lan" as a zone on the DNS server config file 3, Run dcpromo on 2003 server 3a, Choose DC for new domain 3b, Choose "domain in new forest" 3c, Full DNS name = contoso.lan 3d, DNS Registration Diagnostics - install DNS later I have just done this on my test server (except the bind update/configuration) Am I on the right track? What's next? I am just going to treat myself to a lunch break while that is updating :-)

Thanks guys, a couple of things, You are correct Geoff. I set up a virtual machine of 2003 svr to do some testing and it got me wondering about what order to do stuff in. I set up AD with dns integrated and setup the router as a forwarder. That seemed to work OK. Do i still need to do what Geoff says and why? The current dns zone on the router is "site1.contoso.co.uk" I wanted the new lan to be called "contoso.lan" Is that possible or will it need to be something like "new.site1.contoso.co.uk" or "new.contoso.co.uk"

Hi everyone, First a bit of background I have just taken over management of a network that has an SME (E-Smith) box as it's DC. This is failing and they bought a Windows 2003 box to replace it. I have set up loads of AD domains before but this site already has a DNS (8.4.6-REL-NOESW) & DHCP Server set up on a debian based router. They are connected to a middle school (On the same site) via another router and they have an existing SME DC that is working fine My question is what should I do to get the Active Directory using the existing DNS service? Is it possible or do I need to set up a new DNS server on the AD box and just configure them to talk to eachother? I am a complet nix newbie so please be gentle

We have just done the SIMS August release update and migrated the DB to the full SQL 2005. After a few glitches it seems to be OK. I was under the impression that the FMS modules would stop using sybase/sqlanywhere and also move to SQL 2005 but when I try to run SOLUS it says that the finance user I login as has'nt got the correct level of priveleges. Does anybody know of a default sysman userpassword that I could use? I phoned up the helpdesk and they said there was definately no Finance update to do with the 2005 migration so not to worry. However, when I run the finance modules on the client they throw up an error but then allow everything to carry on as normal. I also found this http://www.capitasolus.co.uk/ReleaseNotes/FMS/FMS691_Installation_and_Migration_Guide.pdf and that implies that there is an update?!? I'm confused :? The reason I am concerned is mainly because I will have to install FMS on 2 new PCs and the last upgrade disc we got was in May. Can anybody clear my head?

Thanks for the link domino, I managed to change permissions on the mrbs database and web folders so everyone could do anything. It was still giving the same error. I then configured mysql user and database permissions to allow anonymous users to do everything I then changed the mrbs config.inc.php file to # Database login user name: $db_login = ""; # Database login password: $db_password = ''; It is now working. I guess this is highly unsecure, i might try tightening it up in the future

Thanks for the quick response I restarted apache2 and mySql and then the server but none of that made a difference. I'm using Webmin 1.360 to manage apache and MySql but I haven't got a clue how to follow joedetic's advice also when I look at the permissions for the mrbs web folder it says "you are not the owner so you can't change these permissions" the owner is root. :? Please remember, this is all new to me - pretend you are talking to a teacher. Thanks again.

One of my summer projects is to get MRBS up and running As I had a bit of time on my hands I thought I would try using Linux to host the site It is all very new for me so I have been following various guides around the 'net. I used Ubuntu Feisty Fawn in a LAMP setup and then followed the MRBS instructions, pretty much leaving everything set to the defaults. However, when i access the mrbs site I get Any clues what I need to do? The one part of the MRBS Install guide I didn't follow was that I put the contents of the MRBS web folder into /var/www/mrbs because I didn't have a /var/lib/apache/htdocs folder. Once I put it all togoether I am hoping to write a complete guide (maybe on the wiki) for other noobs like me.

I was concerned about this and I asked my system builder (HP Direct) if they could leave them off or stick them on the inside of the case. HP looked into it and said that it is a legal requirement for OEM vendors to put the sticker in a visible place on the case. I just found a really cool genealogy app called Family.Show at http://www.vertigo.com/familyshow.aspx It is a programme to showcase the WPF.net 3 technologies. It is a really good example of how to make a complicated design more visually simple/attractive but still remaining powerful. Not sure if it has much use is school but could perhaps be used in History lessons, perhaps English. I will be showing it to a few teachers to see what they think.

I would also be interested in this We are replacing 100 PCs over the summer and need the old ones to be securely disposed of. My Site Agent believes that the company supplying any WEEE items should unpack the new kit and take away the old stuff and packaging free of charge. This sounds too good to be true. I just sent an e-mail to the company we are buying from but if they should be doing it free it would be great if I could point them in the right are of legislation.
