Zoom7000 Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I'm due an upgrade on my mobile phone contract in 2 days time. I'm currently on O2 and my tariff is as follows: 600 mins 500 texts Unlimited Web Bolt On (200Mb/Month FUP) £25/month for the duration of the contract (£35/month normally) Now, reading up on other forums, including O2's own forum. It is not a good time to be on O2. Apparently they have been so royally done over by Apple that they can't offer anyone good deals at all. I personally know at least 2 people who have left because O2 aren't even honouring current deals. This doesn't bode well for my current deal. Add to the fact that I want a nice new phone as my N82 is starting to play up. I was initially hoping for an N97, but think it might not be the right time for it with the software problems and also the poor resistive touch screen. The iPhone 3GS will be way out of my budget. So, I'm either looking at the Nokia E71 or I'm starting to get more inclined towards the Blackberry Bold. The best deal I've seen so far is on 3: 500 mins Unlimited texts £30/month (18 Month Contract) Any opinions on what I should go for? Should I go for the Nokia N97/E71 or Blackberry? Or should I look elsewhere?

Zoom7000 Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 Wife already has that. If I'm gonna get a full touch screen, I would rather have a capacitive (like the iPhone) than a resistive (like the 5800) however, I might consider the N97, but again it's the price and the bugs!
kearton Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 I was under the impression that the 5800 and N97 used the same screen? I'm a Nokia nut myself. I had an E51, and "upgraded" to a 5800 because T-Mobile don't offer either the E75 or N97. If you're after a larger touch screen, how about a G1 or G2? (My wife has a G1 and loves it)
mac_shinobi Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 New Samsung Jet? Not a Smartphone, but nice big OLED screen and a browser that supports flash and java. My other half has that phone and the camera on it is pretty good as well - although took her a while to get used to because to start with the photos she took on it were blurred ( user error or moving the handset too quickly after taking the photo or something )
Haptic Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 seriously fella stay well clear of the Blackberry Bold , no end of software issues, our web developer has one and for the 6 months he has owned nothing but issues and thats with 3 replacements , hes now going to downgrade to the 8900 which apperently is rock solid, Personally I would go for the HTC Touch Pro 2 ask the Edugeek Admins for a review of the ones we supplied them with, http://www.ubergizmo.com/photos/2009/2/htc-touch-pro-2_468.jpg

Not seen the Vario IV) * I was recently told by a T-Mobile sales drone that they were cancelling the Vario V in favour of the Nokia N97 as "it would sell more units"...

localzuk Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I'd recommend the T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream). I get 800 mins, unlimited texts and 'unlimited' web (1GB FUP) for £30 a month. It runs android, and there are thousands of applications for it so far.

apoth0r Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I'm in a crappy situation at the moment, renewed my contract early about 18 months ago and the phone i got at the time was what i wanted because i had a work HTC Touch to use, and it was a backup. Since moving job last year i've had to put up with a Sony Ericsson w910i and it just turns itself off. Just rang Orange after reading the thread to see what they can do for me regarding the above mentioned phones and they suggested i waited another 2/3 months when all the phones will be pretty much free. So here's to another 2/3 months of my phone turning itself off Hope the iPhone hits Orange, would much prefer that over most others, just for the apps alone

The Touch Pro 2 is a windows mobile device. So any software that works on Windows mobile will work on it. On the Android, there are a few turn by turn packages. One example would be the CoPilot Live GPS software available from the market. The UK version is £22.60, or a full European one is about £55. The community for Android is supposedly superb, and developing for both Android and WinMo is very simple (Java and .Net are easy to code in).

dtakias Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 (edited) If you are thinking of getting the N97 don't hesitate about it. The phone is awesome with amazing capabilities. The only negatives are the resistive screen and it's low brighteness. If it had a capacitive AMOLED screen and a hardware 3D accelerator it would be so much better. Also lack of system RAM is not a major drawback as new firmwares will optimise memory usage. Don't worry about the software problems/bugs. After V11 of the firmware the phone is very stable. Nokia is famous for realeasing handsets to the market before making sure they have stable firmware. But they provide massive support, remember the N95 got it's last firmware update in January 2009. Not to mention the massive support of software from the S60 community and the ability to do everything from your PC with Nokia PC Suite. Edit- Also Garmin Mobile XT runs great on it with full touch capabilities. Edited August 13, 2009 by dtakias
