teddybear Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 After loads of nagging, moaning and being a pain to the bosses above me I've finally managed to get the go ahead for a computer suite in one of the primary schools I work in. This school is quite a large one, we are getting loads of laptops refreshed soon and some of them will be replaced with desktop PCs. I've got the go ahead to have it rewired, more power and network points plus the schools janitor was a joiner in years gone by so he's almost finished putting desks all the way around the room. A promethean board has been ordered and I'm going to see if I can bat my eyelids to the SMT to see if I can also get a decent colour laser printer for the room (although there are 9 in the school, one may be moved...) The reason I am posting is asking for ideas on brightening the room up a bit. What kind of posters or other things would be a good idea to cover the walls? I found a site a while ago with some posters showing computer parts etc (this room will be used by kids from primary 1 to primary 7) but of course I forgot to bookmark it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated :-) Thanks!

synaesthesia Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Seen this in a couple of schools - disassembled PC's and laptops glued to some ply sheet and hung on the walls. One of them even had a rudimentary light system set up so people could identify each part by pressing the corresponding button. I found this a little "scary" in a Primary school however it really helped the students understand the important parts and very importantly, got them very interested in IT. Favourite one was an A3 sized peice of ply, and the laptop stripped down so it hard the keyboard off, motherboard in plain view, processor, cdrom, hdd, tft etc all "separated" from the unit. Great thing to do with an old laptop that would otherwise be binned. 1
john Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 The DT Tech at a school I used to work stripped down a Sony Mavica FDD Digi-cam and did that and it was amazing, he did it on an A3 piece of ply and split it making little brackets to hold it all up so you could look through it from all ways it was really a masterpiece, it should have been a piece of modern art Very good idea though showed how it all works 1

Great thing to do with an old laptop that would otherwise be binned. This can be done in such a way that the laptop still works, too, which always looks impressive. An entire classroom stuffed with blatantly IT-related posters might wind up looking a bit dull/intimidating, so it might be an idea to display something that is more subtly IT-related. Computer generated images of landscapes are good, or creatures/people/cartoon characters (scenes from recent CGI movies might work well). -- David Hicks 1

I can get the first years at high school to make up some things too.

teddybear Posted July 27, 2009 Author Posted July 27, 2009 Had a word with my boss this morning, managed to obtain an old HP base unit (dc7700 I think) so that will be stripped down and somehow mounted on a piece of board for the wall. He's also given me a couple of old digital cameras to see if I can do something with them too :-)
