New Router For Home Suggestions Please

OK so my home router has decided to play up constantly so I'm in the market for a new one.

 

I'm looking for b,g,a,n standards, firewall, port forwarding, LAN ports and reliability (VPN not essential but would be nice).

 

I've been looking at this one but it seems only to have be capable of n bands and I need a and g as well.

 

Any suggestions welcome.

If it is an ADSL one you want I recommend the DGN2000 by Netgear, best bit of kit I've had, very impressed with it and you can also have 4 SSID's if you want.

I think I would recommend the Netgear kit also. Had several here and recommended a few to friends and families and no issues what so ever.

The netgear one looks nice and has everything I need but am I missing something?

 

It appears to have b/g/n but not 'a'. Two of my laptops here use 'a' but not 'n', one uses 'n' and the iPhone uses 'g' and since I live in an area populated by loads of student lets I get continually blasted out by b/g signals. As yet no-one around here is using a/n so it makes sense to use it if I've got it.

If you use ADSL or ADSL2+ then get an ADSL or ADSL2+ Modem by linksys or netgear ( this should have one RJ11 or telephone connector and an RJ45 network connector )

The RJ11 will go into the ADSL filter and the RJ45 to an apple airport extreme

obviously if you are on cable ( virgin media or something similiar ) then you wont need the adsl modem

The DGN2000 is an excellent piece of kit!

 

Bought it a few months ago, very easy to setup and never had any problems.

 

Been playing about with settings recently, my black macbook shows it running at 300Mbps

The airport extreme does what you want with regards to a/g/n

It does indeed and I like it but I've just found a 3com wireless AP that I had in a cupboard that can broadcast in b/g/a so I can piggy back that on to the (cheaper) Netgear one ad have my self covered for half the price.

I've got one of the DG834G's at home, and it has been rock solid for the 4 years i have owned it. I am considering upgrading to the DGN2000 in the near future as well.

The Draytek Vigors are very good routers, we have two on our backup ADSL lines (not wireless). I would recommend them over the Netgears. (We got ours on recomendation of Panasonic for setting up some stuff on our phone system before we got our leased lines)

I always buy Netgear for home routers. They just work like they should. Don't go near Belkin whatever you do!!

I like Netgear routers too. Generally very reliable and full of features. Only some of the advanced options I found fiddly, but overall yes they are good routers.

I have a netgear at home only to find out afterwards it was a netgear router from sky ( got it off of ebay ) and was not advertised as that so was not happy with that. Hopefully will be getting a router at some point.

@ Dos Box - totally agreed on the belkin ( and thats anything belkin as far as I am concerned ) as far as networking goes at least anyway as I know they do splitters for vga, keyboards , mouse etc

Apart from the fact they'd have got it for free then sold it on to you, what's the problem with it? It is the same router but with Sky firmware - you can flash it back over to being a 'real' Netgear with a bit of magic, mine's being running at home on a hand me down Sky one for years

with what firmware because I tried all the firmwares from netgears site and kept getting an error message and it would not allow me to upload the firmware ( directly connected via ethernet not wireless )

You basically use the Netgear recovery utility intended for fixing bad firmware upgrades to force the Netgear firmware back onto it. Have had no issues with it at all - there's a handy tutorial here :
