kearton Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Did anyone else spot the funny bits in the last episode of TG (where the 3 lads are in the office, ringing Insurance companies)? BBC iPlayer - Top Gear: Series 13: Episode 2 (new series) Do you think the photos on their desks are really theirs? Capt. Slow has a photo of the Queen, Hampster has a photo of a Cow, and one of a man with a dog. Later on there is a photo of a dog by itself (and it didn't look like "Top Gear Dog") that I didn't see before. i.e do the photos change? But the funniest bit for me was at 2:57 you can see the Stig in the background using the photocopier...... to photocopy his head!

Great bit of consumer advice for top gear. Get illegally insured for a car too powerful for you to handle by pretending it's your Mum's and your a 'named driver' - lol

Didn't realise the were looking at insurance as well. Neither of us spent more than £500 on our first cars. I didn't pass my test untill I was 26/7 so Insurance wasn't too bad, about £6/700ish. Didn't realise that it could be as high as £3k on a £900 1.5L car for a 17yr old - Ouch!!! Edited June 29, 2009 by tmcd35

Didn't realise the were looking at insurance as well. Neither of us spent more than £500 on our first cars. I didn't pass my test untill I was 26/7 so Insurance wasn't too bad, about £6/700ish. Didn't realise that it could be as high as £3k on a £900 1.5L car for a 17yr old - Ouch!!! My first car was a 1.3CL 1983 Golf. It cost £175 with a years MOT. It cost a further £75 to tax it for 6 months. It then cost me £83 a month to insure it, 3rd party fire and theft only. That's a grand total of just under £1000 to insure a car worth £175. This was 10 years ago, things are much worse now - my friend recently paid £1400 to insure a 1.0 litre Peugeot 106. Out of interest we also got a quote for the same golf that I insured all those years ago. Over £2000! He lives in the same street as I did at the time, so that's over a 100% rise in 10 years! Luckily my current wreck of a car only costs me £250 a year to insure fully comp with no claims bonus protection and legal cover as well, but for new drivers it's a joke these days! Mike.

john Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 (edited) My first years car insurance was about £2800 fully comp on my £750 golf I had at the time, absolute madness, but it soon rocketed down so its now something a bit more respectable at about £800 I think for a year with 5 years protected no claims bonus Edit: Should have said that I don't have that Golf anymore, my current Golf is a Golf GTI so group 13 insurance so not your usual little el-cheapo nip around vehicle to cover. They seem to think idiots and boy racers drive them I don't know where they get that idea from Most certainly was an ace episode of Top Gear though Edited June 29, 2009 by john

bladedanny Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Not been able to buy a car and insure it for £2500 is rubbish both me and my girlfriends managed it. I love top gear but did think it was very poor advice, but then again advice on top gear usually is to be followed with caution.
