That's a big shame I used to buy it every month in the late 90s (when I moved on from Amiga Format). I remember reading the odd copy my dad got in the early 90s where sellers like Software Warehouse (who became jumgle.com) and dabs often had 50 pages of advertising.

I was more a PC Pro guy myself. Only mag I get now though is Linux Journal. Everything else can be easily found online, hence the death of PCW I guess.

I started getting this when I outgrew Computeractive. Shame to see it go.

I don't know... personally I used to subscribe to PCW but kept finding the features were repeating themselves or were almost more like blog posts by the journalists (writing over a period of months about their own personal projects).

 

I get PC Pro now.

I used to read PCW a lot around 2000 - 2004. Shame it's gone really, I always found it more technical and in-depth than most magazines and they had dedicated programming columns for a long time.

I honestly don't get the point of paper publications now... I used to get PC Plus and occasionally PCPro but now all the advantages you got from them have been overtaken.

 

Free software? Nothing worth having on those cover disks you can't get elsewhere.

 

Articles? Usually a month out of date and often just re-runs of stuff you've heard before.

 

Class Reviews? Complete corporate roll-over rubbish. I lose my temper whenever they go with whatever rubbish some marketing guru has fed them as part of their mushroom compost. They actually seem to believe it too which is worse!

 

 

About the only good to be had from any of them now is the odd nugget I've missed or as material to pass the time on a train journey or while the network is plugging away with a major re-RIS.

Must admit PCW subscriber here as well, no notice yet though that its gone to us Although I did notice the other month we got a copy of Computer Shopper i think free with it which did worry me. Im a PCW subscriber but thats from when it was PC Magazine in the past, i used to get the Network Edition which was great and they stopped that, then it all merged into PCW and now

Found all those mags full of tripe. Paid to lie about stuff as they are keen not to upset the advertisers. Micromart all the way.

That is a shame, been a subscriber for quite a few years. Not that it's particularly great however, I think I've read everything I want to read in it in half hour. But it tused to be good

 

Was the first PC magazine I ever bought, in the mid 90's - had my first half decent computer and bought the fattest magazine with what looked like the most free 'stuff' on the floppies...and that turned out to be PCW. Did use to make me laugh how it was like an inch and a half thick with 98% adverts

Got what must be the last edition through the post on Saturday - sad to see it go - though as stated - it has dipped in quality recently

I used to read it avidly in the early 80's, because that's just about all there was then. The teenage mags like ZZap 64 hadn't come along yet.

 

This is when 'personal' computers (IBM PCs) were only owned by businesses, because few individuals could afford them.

 

PCW was my education, through it I learned a lot about how computers were used by grown-ups for business.

 

Sitting for hours typing in and debugging BASIC code into whatever 8-bit machine I had at the time. Anyone remember that?

 

It was the size of a small phone book and full of ads for business IT, photocopiers and the like.

 

Having said that, I haven't touched a copy for about 10 years, which is why it's gone the way it has.

 

Like Top of the Pops, it was great in it's time, but that time has come and gone.
