Hightower Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Germany is different because your insurance is nullified and you're liable for costs if you're found to be negligent in the event of a crash (or so I'm told). But surely if you crash in this country and you were proven to be speeding your insurance would be void?

I had a friend that used the outside lane for about 50miles... its only when he finally pulled over and about 3miles of cars went past he wonderd why people where flipping him the V.... I then had to explain what the fast lane was for and he said oh I didnt know... Some people just shouldnt drive. I tend to just use the outside lane. I know that it's for overtaking only, but you do a lot of that, when you are cruising at 90mph.
zag Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Sounds like the guy deserved a punch in the face for pulling that kind of move. Shame he died though but it sometimes happens, the sentence seems appropriate for the manslaughter charge. Hope he gets out as soon as possible though as crimes like this are really difficult ones as there was no intent to kill.
CHR1S Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 The speed limit was only introduced because during the seventies one driver was doing around 147mph in I believe a jag this was seen as reckless . Seeing as car safety has come a long way, braking distances are now much shorter why is this low limit still in force? Germany seems to do very well without it on the Autobahn. Wes It was an AC Cobra and it did 185mph (reportedly). I agree the speed limits for motorways need revising, along with proper motorway lessons taught to learner drivers and restrictions on foreign lorry drivers.

glensc Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Maybe it's different "down south", but the last time I saw a "middle lane hog" was last year some time - doing 65mph in the middle of a deserted M27 at 4am on Sunday. Pretty sensible on a deserted road. If memory serves the advance driving schools adviced this on deserted roads, as it gives more time and space for an unforseen thing happening, like a tyre blowout, so is regarded as a bit safer.

localzuk Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I've come down to Coventry today and was forced onto the hard shoulder once, cut up 3 times and had to do an emergency stop once. Having a SMART car is nice, but because it is smaller you tend to get people being aggressive and dominating. I have made notes of registrations and locations, have tried reporting at least one but did not exactly get a positive response from the local constabulary ... basically it is my word against the driver (when they find him) as there are no monitoring cameras where it happened so it is unlikely to go further. If there was contact it would be another matter in spite of me arguing that reckless endangerment is reckless endangerment no matter whether there was contact or not ... it is just the case that it is easier to prove if there is. All the culprits were lorries or white vans ... and I am not going to risk contact between me and one of them just so that the police and CPS can do their job ... I understand their difficulty but that doesn't help me. Have you considered getting one of those in-car camera systems? ie. they record and store data if you either push a button or if there is a collision?

I think there is definitely a difference in driving 'style' down south. Although that may be due to increased volume, on the M20 there is always a constant line of trucks on the inside lane so you would be hopping in and out all the time and given the volume of traffic its not that easy to move back to the middle lane. Speeds seem pretty constant too Inside 50mph Middle 70-80mph Outside 90+mph
