I i correct in thinking it is a full install that over installs your current WSUS and not jsut a SP

I'm currently running WSUS and don't have any Vista clients or SQL 2005 so I think I'll wait for reports of the service pack before installing it. WSUS is already doing a superb job keeping all my 2000/XP machines updated.

Yeah I just updated and its made no noticeable different, just a few extra products.

Can WSUS be added to a normal Server 2003 Domain Controller or does it have to run on a seperate box?

 

I want to try this at one of my schools tommorow, but they only have one Server which acts as the Domain, DNS, DHCP, Fileserver. Would adding IIS6/WSUS be okay? The server is a P4 3.06Ghz, 1.5Gb Ram, SATA, RAID and is used by less then 40 clients.

I would definitely not put it on a DC. It's just that this thing becomes your one update source for all of your clients and servers and runs things like SQL. Even a low-end box would let you test it out to a degree.

Didn't say it wasn't possible- it's just not something you should do. On a network with 40 clients it may not be that bad- especially if updates occur off-peak and in the background. If you run a medium to large sized network in a school and let WSUS do its thing during the day- and most days are busy- you're probably going to notice some performance degradation. Not to mention the fact that if let WSUS download updates to the local HDD for distribution you will be taking up *lots* of space...

The school has no other decent spare PCs I could use. Even if they did it seems that I need a box running:

Which means buying another license in addition to the PC

 

Have another school that has a 64bit Windows 2003 Server I could try it on and SODS law has it that WSUS only seems to work on 32Bit OS!

 

So thats both the Group Policy snap-in and WSUS the 64bit version doesn't run..... 8O

Oh theres a list of normal things that dont work with the 64 bit version :? I have one to put in soon as well but I can live without usign both of those on the server ofc but it dont look to clever does it

Did any one upgrade from WSUS to WSUS service pack 1.

 

Does it over write the current WSUS install, is it a new install with SP1

built in or is it just a SP. It looks from the download that it is the

complete WSUS install with the SP intergrated.

Windows Updates keeps trying to install WSUS SP1 on my servers. It keeps failing though. I'll probably manually install it when I have time.

 

IIRC you only need it for Vista updates.

WSUS SP1 Has just installed successfully on one of my servers and totally failed on the other. Apparently the following error is driving people to distraction all over the net.

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.
