School are not going to be happy. The outbuilding is at the side of the school and is a Professional Development Centre. Probably around 150 Meters from the main school comms cabinet. The outbuilding was a council funded development and I think someone has made a mistake somewhere. I am going to suggest getting BT to move the socket; they should have done it properly in the first place. Thankyou for the input!

To be honest - the fact that this job has been left for over a year had me suspicious that it wasn't quite as straightforward as suggested. I honest think the BT Engineer came in, saw how long the cable run to the new building was and thought "cant't be a****" Thanks for your help and for pointing me in the right direction. Hi guys, Hoping for some pointers here on telephone cabling which I don't really know much about. A school I work in has bought a BT Phoneline to be used by the staff in an outbuilding they have. BT came last year (before I started) and said that there were no lines going into the outbuilding and that they can put a new socket in the main school, next to the comms cabinet and that it can be linked through to the outbuilding via the existing data cabling. My predecessor has left and I have taken over this school and this still hasn't been done. I am hoping it is fairly straight forward. Could some please point me in the direction of how I would do this? The setup is as follows: BT SOCKET ON WALL ----> MAIN SCHOOL ----> Fibrelink ---> OUTBUILDING I assume I need some form of converter to plug from the BT wallsocket into the link socket that goes across to the other building and then another convertor at the outbuilding side? Hi guys, One of the schools I work in has bought a Mac Mini Server running Mountain Lion. I want to be able to use the MDM features and manage the school iPads. I have setup Profile Manager, enrolled an iPad and I can send out settings to iPads etc. I have an iPad that has been setup by a teacher with all the folders and apps she needs. Usually I would just use iTunes and backup and restore this "master" ipad onto the others. This time the school wants different iPads for different Year Groups. Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 has different apps etc so need to be organised in two groups. Things I am struggling with are: 1. Can I remotely manage iOS apps? How do I deploy Apps to enrolled iPads? I am beginning to think that this is not possible. I thought I would be able to push apps to different iPads depending on which group they are a part of. Do I have to transfer apps to the server and the assignment to a push profile? 2. Can I set the the wall paper on all ipads? 3. Do I have to enroll each ipad individually or is there a faster way? I have also done a search and Meraki looks very good too considering its free. Will Meraki be able to do what I am after? Thanks cm786

Thanks for the information. Yes it is a Primary School and you say; they are much tighter restricted. This is why I am after a chat with with one in a primary school to understand the day to day issues. I know its a bad time with the summer holidays however which is why I have tried on here! lol:D

Hi guys, Not sure if this is the right location so mods please feel free to move if appropriate. I was after some help. I have spent the last few years working in Oldham, Manchester and Tameside supporting Primary Schools. One of the Head Teachers of a school that I work at was recently appointed Head Teacher at a school in Rochdale. His existing ICT Technician has resigned and he has asked me if I would be interested in working in Rochdale for half a day a week. I have been to visit the school and I was surprised by the level of control the local authority seem to have; schools in other areas seem so much more autonomous. I have to prove to him that I can work within the umbrella of Rochdale LA before we can proceed in September. I have tried to get in touch with the person in charge of the Educational Support team to try to get some information but no reply yet - I assume he is on holiday. What I was wondering (and its a big ask!) if any Technician or Network Manager in a Rochdale school would be willing for me to go in and visit them and have a chat to see how things generally work in Rochdale schools for the technical support on a day to day basis. I need to understand how internet access through the proxy works, the nature of the shared domain and general tips. The summer holidays I know do make this difficult which is why I am posting this request on this forum. If anyone is able to help I would be most grateful. Hi guys, I am struggling getting Success Maker 1.7.2 to work using Multipoint Server 2011. The successmaker client side (Workstation Setup) works fine on Windows 7 32bit clients but when I try to install the client side to the School Multipoint Servers the install launches fine but then fails saying the installation failed to install successfully. To try to get round this, I have copied the ResultsManager folder from a working client and put it on the Multipoint server. Once I have mapped the M:\ drive the software launches and I can log in but when you try to launch an activity the software hangs saying recording....... Has anyone got any ideas? Worse thing is the school have booked training on Thursday so I have to get it working by then! They have 10 Windows 7 Pro 32bit clients that it has installed on and is working but they will need more PCs then that for the training, hence why I wanted to put it on the Multipoint Server so the the rest of the ICT suite could be used too. Hi guys, Recently setup a small 15 client ICT Suite with Windows Multipoint Server 2011. I used LG Network Monitors that have the built in Ncomputing L300 zero client. This is the first time I have setup Multipoint Server so have a few little teething issues that I would appreciate some help with. 1. I have joined the Multipoint Server machine to the domain. When a user visits a client, they press on connect and are greeted with the Windows Multipoint Server logon box. The school domain is called SCHOOL, so the user just types in a username such as year5 and logins in. On two clients however the login domain name is set as MULTIPOINT1 which is the name of the multipoint server rather then SCHOOL which is the name of the domain. This means the users are not able to login unless they click on other user and then, put the domain name in front of there username, such as SCHOOL\year5. I don't understand why these two clients differ from the others? How can I set them to be the same as the others? 2. I am not able to update the firmware. I click on update firmware on the Vspace Server installed on the Multipoint Server client but nothing seems to happen. What am I doing wrong?? Do I need to do this from a client if so how? 3. Occasionally the clients just seem to drop connection to the server. I can log back in straight away and everything works as expected but this is annoying and something the staff and pupils would struggle with. Any ideas why this should be happening? The whole suite is using a gigabit switch and the server is an i7-2600, 16Gb Ram, 120Gb SSD etc. Thanks for any assistance. cm786

I have seen Multipoint Server working very well in the primary that I visited which children running Windows Movie Maker Live and playing Education City flash games. The reason for choosing it at the current school is space and power requirements (the ICT suite is just a room at the back of the hall!) So for Remote FX do I need a graphics card on the server? All clients are going to be connected via LAN Would an i7-2600 CPU be sufficient? Looking to service 20 clients Ram from reading the deployment guide can be up to 32Gb so that is clear. Thanks

Hi guys, Hope you are well. After April I am starting at a large primary school. The ICT is in a pretty poor state with Windows XP PCs in the ICT Suite that are 6 years old and a Windows 2003 Domain Controller. It takes literally 5 mins to login per child and lots of software and hardware issues. They use Successmaker too which is something I am not too familiar with to be honest. Anyway, I have been given the green light and budget backing to setup everything again from scratch. The Suite is rather small to be holding 30 PCs and gets very hot. I went to a demo at another school running Windows Multipoint Server 2011 and I was impressed with speed of the logins and the savings in space, heat and time setting up - no cloning! YAY! :-) The Network Manger was really happy with the setup and recommended it. He uses a SSD drive for speed and 16Gb ram on the i7 server. My plans for the suite school are: 30x LG Network Monitors 22" 2x i7 Servers 48 Port or 2 x 24 Port Gigabit switches (for ICT Suite) A new Domain Controller - Xeon 2.5Ghz, 8Gb Ram, 250Gb SATA drives etc (they have already bought this) I need help deciding on the spec of the i7 Servers and general setup advice. The i7 Servers need to be super high spec and reliable. I am going to build the servers myself so can spec whatever we like. How much Ram is advisable? I know that as much as possible is always good but money will come into it. Each i7 server will potentiall be running a full 20 clients. The clients will be used for general office work, flash education games (Education City) and Windows Movie Maker. What kind of reliable motherboards would be good? I want to get SSD drives, so am thinking of 2 x 128GB. Is RAID 0 worth getting up? What spec of I7 Processor is ideal? Do Intel do any specifically for a server environment? Do I install Windows 7 on the I7 server and then join the machine on as a member of the domain? Any general advice would be helpful too. Many thanks cm786

Hi Guys I have 11 iPads. One is the administrator and 10 are the ones of the class. What I want to do is set up my Admin iPad and have all the other iPads become a clone in terms of icons and icon position. The data can stay on each individual iPad. We have over 150 apps and we do not have time to spend moving each app icon to the right place so that a student can find it in the right place. In other words, how do I make 11 iPads appear the same? Thanks for any advice.

Hi Guys, Running an Windows Server 2008/Windows 7 network. Using GP default printer is set as black A class at the moment are using the 2Simple suite of programs; specifically 2 graph. The problem we have with it is that the program does not give the user the chance to pick the printer they want to use - it just prints to the black printer. The teacher obviously wants to print the graphs out in colour. Any ideas to allow the kids to change the printer? I was thinking of maybe some script that could be run to change the default printer to colour before launching the software? Thanks cm786

Hi guys, I am sure their is a simple solution to this. In one of my Primary schools (running Server 2008 and Windows 7) the staff all login using a shared login. They have access to various shared drives. The drives are: Teacher Drive (teacher work saved) Global Drive (General resources) Management Drive (Confidential or Assessment things saved) I have been asked if it can be setup so that when a teacher clicks on the Management Drive the first time they login they are prompted for a password before they can access it? Just an extra step in security. I have suggested individual staff accounts where the Management drive can only be assigned to those that need it using Group Policy but been told individual accounts for teachers "might be too complicated" Thanks for any help.

Thanks for all the help. Just to update everyone Using a Firewire cable and Target Disc mode the data was copied off and then the OS had to be rebuilt from scratch which was time consuming but at least they are back up and running now.

Hi guys, Had staff today complaining to me that the printers keep disappearing when they try to print over the network at a school I look after. They have Server 2008 with Windows 7 Pro and all client machines have AVG Business 9.0 on them. Now disappearing printers is strange because every workstation has each printer locally installed (they were in the image). I logged into a few workstations locally and found that the printer spooler was disabled! Now this got me suspicious so I downloaded the Windows Malicious software removal tool and ran it. Low and behold it detected and removed cornflicker!! I thought I had seen the end of this virus! :mad: Now the Main domain controller and fileserver are provided and maintained by the local authority and has McAfee on it. I scanned this and this also came up as infected! Why is the antivirus software not picking up cornflicker? I thought Windows 7 was pretty secure against cornflicker (obviously I am wrong!). Now I will have to work my way through all the clients and remove it. What is the best procedure to do this and protect against reinfection? On a Windows XP machine network last year I had to disconnect each machine from the network, run the Microsoft malicious software patch to remove cornflicker, then patch XP with the MS08-67, MS08-68 and MS09-01 Patches and then finally physically add each machine it back to the Network (plug back in) Is there a similar procedure with Windows 7? I would have thought it wouldn't need patching up? Why has AVG and McAfee (who both have real-time protection) failed to protect the machines? Thanks for any help. cm786

Thanks for the replies. We managed to boot into terminal. I used fsck to do a basic diagnosis of the disk (th /sbin/fsck -fy) and this said that certain files were missing - off the top of my head DSRunningSP3 or similar. I also put in an OS X installation disc and booted off it and used the Disk Utility to repair the disk which made no difference - it still does not boot. Now the problem we have is that the children's work is on the server on a RAID 1 setup (mirrored) so we need to get the work off and try to get the server up and running urgently. The school have no copy of Mac OS X 10.6 Server CD which the Mac Mini will have come with and I don't have a copy either! Whats the easiest way to get it working again? Can I use a OSX Server disc if I can get hold of one to do some kind of repair installation? Thanks

Hi guys, Got an urgent problem. A Mac Mini OSX 10.6 Server at a primary school of mine hangs on startup at the apple screen with what I like to call "The Pinwheel of Death" ... it never actually gets to so much as the login screen, it hangs at the main apple screen Obviously this is a major issue so any advice on how to fix it without loosing data? The system was restarted after Apple Updates. Is their a way to restore it back like with Windows System Restore or similar. I am relativity inexperienced with Macs so need as much help as I can! Hi guys, Bit of a long story but I have a school that has just bought this: HP ProLiant ML350 G6 Tower Server - Misco.co.uk And were supplied with 3 x SATA Hard drives. Unfortuantly these are not proper HP SAS drives but normal SATA drives. I am having trouble getting the server to boot up from the SATA drives! I can put the Windows Server 2008 CD in or the HP Prolient Setup CD and it will run setup and detect the hard drives fine and install but when I reboot the Server it does not boot from the hard drives. I have played with the boot priority but still get the same problem. Anyone got any ideas? I don't have the option of buying HP SAS drives due to budget restrictions in that they have hardly any money left spend until April. Surely the Server can boot from a standard SATA drive? Hi guys, I recently did my first Windows 7 / Server 2008 setup (a small 20 PC ICT Suite). I used Acronis trueimage to clone the Windows 7 PCs . The PCs are running Windows 7 Pro and I activated using the volume key we purchased from Ramesys. When I restored the images, the new machines needed activating again! I then had to go round and activate all the machines again online. This worked but it is not ideal. I would just like them to stay activated like they used to in Windows XP. Hopefully their is a simple solution to this? Thanks, cm786
