Take a look at SmarterMail it has many Exchange like features, anti virus/spam 'out of the box', an amazing admin & user interface and the pricing isn't bad either.

Exchange 2007 here, with the added benefit that users can access their user areas via OWA 2007 too

 

Interesting, how do you link the user areas to OWA?

 

I was going to do this through share point at but it seems complicated.

Same here....over a three day period it took about six hours to implement in total for upto 1200 users in our case. Csv 'd the users up year by year etc and it opens up a whole new world to the staff all for free!

I cant say its better than exchange or zimbra but its hosted by google and that leaves me with less headaches for backups, server space, licencing. It just makes sense to try it before you start going down another route...

We use google apps for staff email, but would be equally suited for pupil email. Free, and has use of the google suite of webapps. Does all it needs to do. Easy if you don't know how to setup your own email system like Zimbra (which I don't know how to do, although I'd like to know).

we use exchange 2003. we have a setup of 3 physcial exchange boxes. 2 running 1 main virtual server and 1 running the front end.

We have been using it for over 6 years now without any issues at all. Easy to set up but with some nice features. You can use the web based interface (we have integrated that into our VLE) that comes with it, but it also works very well with Outlook: you don't need the (extra) Outlook connector if you just want basic functionality.

google's [education apps] servers used to be solely in the US, hence data protection issues, etc, however I'm led to believe that they are now in Dublin and hence come under EU legislation

 

you may also wish to consider Microsoft live@edu exchange labs product - free hosted exchange basically (servers in Dublin) [presumably not next to google's!]

Under the EU-US Safe Harbor agreement ([ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Safe_Harbor_Privacy_Principles]International Safe Harbor Privacy Principles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]) EU data is now able to be transferred to the US without any data protection implications providing the company involved is accredited by the US department of commerce. Unsurprisingly google is an accredited company.

We use Easymail + (hate it!) for Students here, with an internally hosted Exchange Server for the staff - which is already proving its worth over EasyMail for Students. It was difficult to paint the illusion it was all running on one domain though - but can offer advice to anyone looking to run the two services in parallel if needs be.

We used to use exchange, was a nightmare to manage. I hava used Zimbra and would recommend.

We have just migrated to Google Apps Education Edition. We dont have to worry about managing and maintaining servers or updates any more. AND ITS FREE.

Check out the Live@Edu programme, free email, SkyDrive and Office Online for all your students. Had a demo at Reading the other day, email is based on Exchange 14 and looks a good bet - even better it's free

I'm just about to deploy this for my students, just paid for the new domain name, just need for it to propogate and I'll start the setup next week
