I mean physically, cds and boxes. I've got a cupboard full to the brim with Primary software, some of it ancient. I'm trying to organise it as i want to make a new ghost image.

Just got me thinking...how have you got yours organised?..i might do mine by subject, Key stage wouldn't work.

It's sorted under the mythic system - "...seek and ye shall find, (if you are worthy)"

Or rather, disks are copied to the network CD Server, codes are put onto a technicians share\folder, and then the disks are thrown into boxes and put into storage (IE lost)..

One copy of each disk is put into a CD wallet. Seperate wallets for each department, Whole School, Drivers and Microsoft Select Agreement.

Serials are added to our WIKI.

I keep all mine in those CD wallets that Microsoft give you to store all those software CDs they keep sending us as part of their Schools license agreement. They seem to be full of driver CDs and copies of various Linux distros.

I've started to ISO every disk we get, chuck it onto our TeraStation in categorised folders, with licenses in a text file where needed.

The legacy system is on our staff shared area, in a restricted folder called ITAdmin. That has software, utilities, accounts, drivers etc.

I make a point of handing the physical media back, as it can't come back and bite me in the bum when they can't find it.

I have a copier paper box for each subject with their CDs etc in. My CDs - op syst, drivers etc are in those CD filing boxes

Licences are in the filing cabinet

I recently had a big purge of software that we don't have on the system (no network licence in most cases). I gave the staff a list of what I considered vaguely useful stuff - eg 'tizzy's toybox- 3 copies' so they could use them if they want to. Those are just on a separate shelf.

All our software CDs are in a cupboard in our office categorized into departments.

I've often wondered whether to leave responsibility for CDs to the relevant department after we have installed it.

All our softwares physical media is in a big rollerdoor locked cabinet with each piece of software in a labelled archive-style folder with the manuals/licence agreement, etc

Yeah, there is that problem, suppose.

This reminds me, we should really have a sort out of all our old "never ever used" software.

We are in the process of this. Part "we know this is never used so remove it, archive the software and see if there are complaints" plus going to each department and saying "Please provide us with a list of software you use and where it is referenced in your schemes of work". We are slightly flexible but we are fed up of fifty million language applications that all overlap and get used either never or once a year.

As for our storage. We have CD's in cases in racks, licenses are in a document folder and all referenced in a spreadsheet. Not sure we could ISO everything! Aiming to get this all sorted into the help desk once it is up and running and settled down.

hi

I copy the disks to a server and then create a 2 htlm pages with links to the correct folders. One has the site licience programs and the other has extra programs sorted by department.

Just an idea.

We copied all of our CDs to a HDD to store them in case of "misplacement" by other members of staff.

The CD's themselves are divided into 3 sections:

Everything we run via the network is stored in a metal DJ-style CD case.

All of our drivers CDs, OS CDs etc. are on 1 shelf of a cupboard.

All of the software which requires a license code when installing is on another shelf in the cupboard.

We so rarely have to use an actual CD that they are in no particular order beyond that.

I take copies of the CDs, and keep these in lever arch folders, sorted by department. The originals I give back to the departments, as I simply don't have the storage space for all those boxes.

I do the same, anything that comes to me from another member of staff goes back in their pigeon hole after copying to our Software share. Anything that comes directly to me from the supplier goes in my round file.

On a NAS with tech only share access with serials and config details in text files. Physical discs are in a cupboard I organised last year but has once again returned to the "Are you sure its in here?" storage system.

Wayyyyyyyy too much old software on the system, I made an attempt to clear it out on the image for our new computers lat year but each department returned their lists with pretty much everything ticked. Just remove their shortcuts and see if complaints begin
