Are there multiple Java versions in Add/Remove programs or multiple folders in the Program Files/Java directory? You may need to remove these first.

Do you stop the 'Java Quick Starter' service before upgrading Java? Installation fails if it is still running.

For someone with little or no experience of Linux, the best distro to start with is Ubuntu. Ubuntu has a large community and there are many people on this forum who use Ubuntu. Once you become more confident using Linux, you can try other distros which may suit your needs better. To get you started, have a look at these: Ubuntu Pocket Guide Ubuntu 8.04 Server Guide Fedora is a good distro, but it isn't as easy and friendly as other distros (I wouldn't recommend it as your first distro). If you were to go the Fedora/Red Hat route, CentOS makes a better server.

I admire your perseverance with Xandros. Many people would have given up long ago. Unfortunately the version of Xandros that is already installed on the EeePC doesn't fully support all the hardware. You are probably better off with one of the community Linux Distros that have been specifically created for the EeePC. Ubuntu Eee, eeeXubuntu, Eeedora, Pupeee & Cruncheee all work "out of the box".

I am not familiar with this particular model. On most LaserJet models, the Go, OK or Select button is green.

HP printers can be reset by turning them off, holding down the green button and turning them back on. You may need to hold down the button for up to 20 seconds.

I use the Advanced Proxy Add-on http://http://www.advproxy.net/ for SmoothWall. You can add the IP addresses or MAC addresses of the machines that you do not want to use the proxy to the unrestricted addresses section.
