Mango_RW Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 We all love talking to people (*cough* teachers *cough*) who for some reason believe they should try to speak to us on the same level we talk between ourselves, what funny mis-pronounciations have you heard when they bright and intelligent creatures have tried techie speak? One funy I heard was referring to a netgear wireless adapter as the 'netgar thingy' - cant they read. Also heard an engligh teacher tell me the machine had gone into the 'bee-oss' ...
ChrisH Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 That reminds me I have been asked for a VD player before
ConTheITGuy Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 But is that from the same people who go on T'Internet and use George Formby Grills! Andy.
paul Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Hmmm wonder how many people actually think they are called "VD" players after Peter Kaye? Staff here get realy mixed up over USB Pen drives, one calls them a "Flash", others "Dooberies" or the realy technical "Thing".
ConTheITGuy Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Ours thought they'd been given new whistles when they first arrived!
Mango_RW Posted July 19, 2005 Author Posted July 19, 2005 But is that from the same people who go on T'Internet and use George Formby Grills! Andy. LOL!
ninjabeaver Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Yeah, but the really strange thing is, and possibly quite disturbing, is we know EXACTLY what they are talking about.
Mango_RW Posted July 19, 2005 Author Posted July 19, 2005 Slightly off topic but funny none the less. One of the best things i've witnessed was when I was a student. I was in the tech room chatting to the guys when a teacher appeared at the door saying there was a problem with the printer. Without hesitating the network manager looked to the piece of paper stuck to the back of the door right next to where the teacher was standing, which consisted of 4 coloumns which you pick any word from coloumns 1,2 & 3 but the fourth is optional. he retorted with "oh right... thats got to be PCI Kernal Modulation Bus" the teacher replied, "yeah thats what I thought it was." 8O !! Any one done anything as sinister as that?
russdev Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 rofl love it might have to try that going off topic even more.. there is a book by scott adams called joy of work http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0752217208/qid=1121776349/sr=1-22/ref=sr_1_2_22/202-2082156-1339859 and lhas some really funny stuff to try out at work... one classic is reducing height of a collegues chair a little bit each day and then inlist other staff to make comments like 'that new hairstyle no must be angle looking at you then' russ
woody Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 If you really want to have a laugh about that sort of thing, but to the extreme, read BOFH on the register website. Somebody from the LGfL forum pointed it out to me and I was hooked after that! He mentions a daily flip chart with various random techie expressions to use as excuses from time to time. http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/bofh/
ConTheITGuy Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 The past couple of months it hasn't been quite so regular has it?
Mango_RW Posted July 19, 2005 Author Posted July 19, 2005 just read the title of the thread how ironic!
tarquel Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I myself got asked why I needed to hold onto a laptop that I had wiped and setup again, as I told the teacher I needed to hang on to it to "try something out with it". She asked "what?" and I was about to start explaining and then decided to say "Well, are you gonna understand if I try and explain it to you?" and she said "no, probably not. Its ok. Keep the laptop for a bit" lmao I doubt I could have explained that I needed to use it, along with another computer, to try and test out a VPN/Firewall router using multiple IP ranges and testing connectivity between them.... etc Hell, I hardly understand it myself yet lol Nath
GrumbleDook Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 If you really want to have a laugh about that sort of thing, but to the extreme, read BOFH on the register website. He mentions a daily flip chart with various random techie expressions to use as excuses from time to time. http://www.theregister.co.uk/odds/bofh/ http://bofh.ntk.net/Bastard.html is the original stuff ... and there are numerous excuse servers doing the rounds ... the one I used to have was an "abuse of the day" server ... Used to cheer me up no end.
ConTheITGuy Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 just read the title of the thread how ironic! I presumed you'd done that on purpose! Andy.
ConTheITGuy Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 http://bofh.ntk.net/Bastard.html is the original stuff ... Fortunately, already read that at home... blocked here in Lancs!
GrumbleDook Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 http://bofh.ntk.net/Bastard.html is the original stuff ... Fortunately, already read that at home... blocked here in Lancs! Do they think it will give you too many good ideas? Or just thelanguage content getting caught on the filters?
neilenormal Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 just read the title of the thread how ironic! In a school these days spelling and grammar have gone the way of the archimedes, the slide rule and the dodo. You should see the quality or reports our lot have produced for years 7 and 8........... In the end the admin staff were all asked to down tools and correct the millions of errors!!!!! And these are degree educated people? One member of Senior Management said "the young ones are so used to spell checkers and that auto correction thingy....." I find it all rather sad....... Neilenormal
mac_shinobi Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 My favourite one I have heard so far is when people pronounce linux as leenux or leenix or something along those lines lol. LMAO @ The piece of paper on the door with 4 columns and choosing a made up excuse why things arent working LOL.
kingswood Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 :-) This thread really cheered me up! We call it "blinding them with rocket science" at work. You just grab a handful of acronyms and concepts and fling them at the poor people and watch their reaction! This last week someone asked me why the two sites hadn't been linked yet (second in ICT actually) so I told the person why. I said, "you do understand what an IP address is don't you?" Their face said it all.... Great stuff. Paul
mac_shinobi Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 I never knew an I.P Address was rocket science lol
ConTheITGuy Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 I think the point is: it might as well be!
