The most random problem that has been reported to you ?

I had a text message off a Head Teacher (primary)

 

Saying :-

 

"When I scroll up and down with my mouse, the monitor squeaks! Any suggestions?" 8O

 

I advised him to "oil his mouse" but im sure the problem will be there Friday when I arrive.

 

This is by far the most unusual problem i've had reported.

 

Anyone ever had a strange error logged for them to repair ?

Ha! I actually have this problem at home but haven't nailed down what it is yet. All my speaker cables, VGA cable, PS/2 cables are bundled together along the desk and something literally does make a squeak/hum when I use the scroll wheel... Sounds more like it's coming from the graphics card, but the PC's so noisy I can hardly tell. Let me know when you fix it

 

On the strange problems front, I've had "My computer won't switch on" and arrived to find there's only a monitor, keyboard and mouse there. The computer was in my office being repaired...

There was a mouse (rodent kind! ) in the staff room of an infant school I visit. The school had all female staff with just myself and the caretaker (who was out) being the men!

 

The women were screaming and running out of the staff room. I was asked (!) to go and catch the mouse armed with a cardboard box and abit of cheese! The head teacher said "your the man, the hunter gatherer, the protector" I couldn't keep a straight face! (I'm more of a wimp)

 

Anyway I went into the staffroom with all the women outside looking in through the door and I spent about 15 minutes hunting around like I was from the SAS trying to find it. :twisted: I got abit bored in the end so I told them that I saw it run outside; there was a hole next to a heating pipe that ran outside which is how it must have come in. I filled it up with bluetack until the caretake came back in the afternoon.

 

Also had the old classic where the monitor on a PC in the nursery is upside down! LOL!

I actually get a similar problem - the noise is much the same, but happens when I minimise or restore a window! And no, it's not a sound effect, it is definately some sort of electrical noise from one component or another :?

 

I also had a weird issue when I had my Mac Mini on the same desk as my Windows box - every time I plugged a device into my Windows front USB ports, my Mac woke from sleep?!!?! They had seperate monitors and everything - only physical connection between the machines was via the network switch and being powered from the same power strip. All that had to happen was the shield of the USB plug touch the shield of the PC port and away went the Mac!!

 

Totally, totally bizarre!

I have had this problem. It was clearly some interference because re-routing the speaker cables away from the monitor solved it.

"The video conferencing doesn't work" - I get this regularly and it is always due to the TV being on the wrong channel. When I tell them to change the channel to A/V, the users say they don't know how, so I have so walk over the other side of the school and press the button on the TV remote.

 

Nothing however comes close to my big iron days. The client phones in and says "Help! The computer is covered in cement." I laugh and say something like "Do you require a jack hammer?" "No says the client, we need you here right now, because it really IS convered in cement." Off I toddle to the client's premises, thinking it isn't April, and sure enough the whole office is covered in wet cement; builders were pumping concrete on the building site next door and the machine exploded. The client wanted me there so I could talk to the insurance company.

I like the car ones, "can you just move that van, its blocking my car in", now remind me agen, whos the one insured to drive the vans, uum not me! But never mind, I have been told by the powers that be that onsite is fine as its private property and they trust me, but I am not going to tell everyone that or else I will be Mr Van mover. Another is, I abandoned my car at the front enterance as there was no parking, any chance you can find some parking for me please. Now I do do bits like this depending on who it is, but its annoying at times. Lightbulbs are another item I am a specialist in, as well as many other jobs, I am sure IT guys must have writing that everyone else can see but we cannot that says, IT support and general handy person

Turns out that sophos had picked up a virus, but she could not work out how to run the AV scan!

 

Funny that - cos she was intelligent enough to install MSN messenger, Yahoo and a host of other software! :?

 

What makes it worse is that we produced and issued a guide to cover all the basics with lots and lots of screenshots on how to do it

thats interesting got an article to go on site about use of msn etc in coorprate world and security risks will post it later.
