tmcd35 Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 To date Opera has been the best browser I've found. Safari seems to have a major slow down problem the more you use it. You have to clear the cache to speed it up again (surely the reverse of what a cache should do!). I've read, on ZDNET I think, that each tab will run in it's own process. It will also have a task manager and memory manager to manage these threads. It appears to almost be a mini OS to run the browser in...interesting! Also, I'm guessing it is at least in part based on the Mozilla engine as I read I line with Google thanking them and another.

Coding webpages to work on both IE and any other browser is a complete nightmare. Code a page and Firefox, Safari or Opera will display it fine - IE will have a fit. If IE displays the page the rest have a fit!?! Enough of my IE bashing - what I'm really interested in is the idea that google have all but coded up a mini OS to run the web browser in. Could this be the future of OS's and Web Browsers? Could Google extend this to their own basic OS release. Run Google web browser with out any other OS installed, then use Google Apps for everyrhing - AKA Cloud computing?

Thats what google do as a business, find new ways to make money. They've been very, very good at it and its hardly a secret (conspiracy) or paranoia to state the obvious. Wow, just imagine how much simpler the life of a system administrator would be - all you would have to do is make sure each PC could boot and load up this self-contained browser OS! Run Google web browser with out any other OS installed, then use Google Apps for everyrhing - AKA Cloud computing? I'd aim for an OS that could also run "web server" based applications, so you could still have a usable stand-alone PC without a network connection, just have it synch your stuff when it does connect - or not, I don't know that I'm all that keen on Google having all my data to itself. -- David Hicks

I anticipate Google just becoming the new MS (no conspiracy) as they have shareholders they have to make them money they don't just have one person who can call the shots and do the right thing. I see Google focusing on the 'cloud' so this could be where they're heading with their mini OS browser combo the downside is you have to putup with ads and constant attempts to invade your privacy. As for IE8 one word 'beta' i think it's worth waiting for the finished product before pulling it to pieces. Edited September 2, 2008 by cookie_monster

I also thought it seemed a little cutsie/comic-strip-ish. For the meantime it's back to Firefox (and ubiquity - the best plugin).

Loving the bookmark homepage as well, what an amazing feature. And I'm not even going to go into the "settings" dialogue Basics. minor tweaks, and under the hood!! Genious!! if only every piece of software was designed like this. Also impressed how it imported all my firefox data like bookmarks and passwords. The address bar google search is also awesome. Now all we need is a Add and flash blocker EDIT: found a bug with backspacing in an edit window which is a bit slow updating the display. Edited September 2, 2008 by zag
richard.thomas Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Chrome does seem to be on a good path... I'm using it currently, I normally use Firefox. If this version is anything to base future versions on I think i'll be moving over to Chrome.
kesomir Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Only thin I don't like about it right now is the colour and the fact that I can't open one dropdown bookmark list and move between them, I have to click on each to open it. That said, it's far above the usability screwup that IE is, so thumbs up.
